Gain vs Volume....a question?
Wow, what a great set of responses. Very informative. Good question Rwd!
What's the 'ideal' room size?
Per F. Alton Everest's book (Sound Studio Construction on a Budget), there are three recommended ratios of room dimensions: 1) width=1.14 times height and length=1.39 times height, 2) width=1.28 times height and length=1.54 times height, and 3) wi...
"Emotionally involving" music and your system...
Pbowne, I heard the Mahavishnu Orchestra in Chicago in 1971 and was absolutely blown away! They performed at an outdoor venue and I ran out to buy an album the next day. Thanks for the reminder -- they must have been on a real roll that year.
What's the 'ideal' room size?
How tall is the ceiling? Is the surface of the ceiling a hard surface or will it be a dropped ceiling. The appropriate room ratio takes all three dimensions into account. Let us know and I'll be glad to run it through my homemade first order calcu...
"Emotionally involving" music and your system...
Live music is almost always better because, I believe, you pick up the energy and dynamics of the musicians. That can't be done at home. For me, the following concerts hit home the closest regarding your question:Bela Fleck (2001, Greensboro, Caro...
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
Wellfed, I would love to find out sometime, though I've never been a fan of added rear firing tweeters (who knows, at this quality level, maybe they're great and they certainly do get some good reviews). I have not yet heard the VR-11's. Of course...
"Trickle up" theory
Drubin, do you think it might be the sheer presence of the music? A theater has many, many speakers in an acoustically satisfactory environment? Someone had earlier referenced car stereos as posessing the musicality/PRAT/timing (your choice of ter...
Speakers to hang on to for LIFE
Mikem, the 11's are out now. They're a bit pricey, but if you amortize that over 20 years ... ;-)
Review: Ridge Street Audio Poiema Speaker cable
They could definately use some help with their website, but thanks for the review. I'll look forward to their getting the speaker cable portion up and running and to getting some info on the Poiema design. Thanks again.
How do iso. cones work and what are the benefits?
The references above are very good. I also agree wtih Imin2u that, in the end, all that matters is whether it sounds better to you. My experience has been that these cones create a very positive lift (no pun intended) with the cd player and a noti...
RIP Cornelius Bumpus
I wondered what happened to him after the Dobbie's. Like Vvrinc, I am saddened whenever a great artist dies.
"Trickle up" theory
No offense taken Twl. I am a great admirer of you and your system. Simple is often good; complex can also be good if done right. I was simply taking up the banner for two things: 1) It is the music that counts (that's the whole gist of this thread...
"Trickle up" theory
My amps have very large power supplies and my speakers are also very large with complex crossovers. Maybe I could have achieved a great result with less, but my listening room is large and I enjoy the stereo even while standing 40 feet away in the...
A Packing and Shipping Manifesto
Excellent post. Thanks Lester. By the way, I have had good luck receiving relatively light items that were packed in peanuts. Maybe I've just been lucky so far.
Should interconnects stay put for best transfer??
Trust your ears. Be careful when plugging, unplugging and moving. Take advantage of the moves and clean the cable and component connections from time to time since they are unplugged anyway. Should be fine. Happy listening.
