Why monoblocks?
Undertow, since when did dual mono become monobloc? All I'm saying is if monobloc designs were the end of and be all, then why aren't there a substantial number of monobloc preamps and converters? It may be that, at least historically, that monoblo...
Why monoblocks?
There are valid engineering reasons for designing monobloc amps and I imagine that sonic benefits thereby flow. But if mono designs are really that much better then why aren't all ultra high end electronics monobloc designs? Where are the monobloc...
Buy tubes from Audio Research or not
Do more research. I could be wrong, but I remember there being problems with retubing and biasing VT-100 amps. Unfortunately, I don't remember which version of the amp. What I do remember of the discussion was that Upscale Audio would no longer se...
As system improves, do bad recordings sound worse?
I don't know if they consistently sound worse or not, but as my system improved it became clearer why a certain recordings are "bad".
Are tone controls worth a second look ?
I have two quality systems and both have tone controls. The McIntosh C42 has an 8 band EQ. In the downstairs system the Drawmer D/A has a 4 band parametric EQ and a single band dynamic EQ. Basically the controls are set and forget, but they are en...
Ohm speakers
I'm not sure how you got your perception, but IMO Ohm speakers are frequent and well represented here on Audiogon.
Is Speaker Termination Required?
Depending upon what material your cables are made of corrosion can become a serious issue with unterminated cables. Also there are some cable designs that cannot be used without some form of termination.I agree that some spades/banana plugs, etc. ...
The truth about Apple/iTunes volume control?
The newer versions of iTunes have effectively eliminated the volume control problem as long as you only use it a little bit.As far as the overloading USB D/A, the only one that I know of that suffers from this problem is the -- hold on a minute, I...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
I looked at your system page, but I don't see any pictures of the room. Does your room contain many highly reflective surfaces? If so, from looking at the Stereophile measurements, the reversing of the driver polarity could result in a mid-treble ...
B&W N800, 800D, 802D for my room 16x17x8
On paper your room dimensions look very bad. What has been your previous experience with full range speakers in this room?
Can you ever have too powerful amp for speakers?
It's obviously more "dangerous" than having the recommended power amp rating. While common sense user practices can prevent most mishaps, there are circumstances beyond the user's control. Here's two: - A short term power outage can turn your syst...
Polarity mystery: Can you help me solve it?
The fact that you think it sounds better doesn't mean it is performing better. It could be a problem with how the speaker mates with your room. Here are the Stereophile measurements.
Gain Question
consider that the SLP-05 has a rated nominal output level of 2V, and is presumably designed to be compatible with your CAD120S. That would suggest that the unspecified input sensitivity of the CAD120S is significantly less than 2V, to assure that ...
Gain Question
Your preamp is a low gain design. I find it interesting that the Cary website doesn't provide input sensitivity specs. It would help to determine where the gain mismatch is located. Either between the phono/preamp or the preamp/amp. Changing to a ...
Share thoughts on Keith Jarrett
Nice comment above about Keith Jarrett and a sideman.I recently saw a documentary on Miles Davis that focused on his early fusion bands. There was some really nice footage of the band playing an Isle of Wight festival. Jarrett and Chick Corea were...
