Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
I am interested in active speakers but for now disappointed. When I run the passive speaker from my main system tube amp, instead of the amp in the active speaker, it sounds way better (Sony, Elac etc).  But you can't stick my Atma-sphere MA-1 int...
Speakers for Atma Sphere M60 mk3
Check Audiokinesis speakers, very OTL-friendly.
Speakers for Atma Sphere M60 mk3
I tried the MA1s (bigger brother of M60) with 4 ohm speakers, including the top of the line (at the time) Dynaudio Consequence. No good. 8 ohm - yes quite good. Varying. Spelz autoformers - I tried and was not convinced. Veils the image a bit an...
Solving the "complex music problem"?
ahuvia - we converge - nice with a thread that actually brings agreement. The recording (and production) sure means a lot. A quite simple but important factor is playback volume. I can remember from way back when, turning down the volume on hard-...
Solving the "complex music problem"?
I agree with many points in this thread - how to improve the playback system, and not least, the integration with the room. Yet I think many problems of ’complex music’ are inherent in the recording. You can reduce them in the playback but they do...
Testing for Dirty Electrical Power
Try your phono stage, at high  volume, without playing records. If you dont hear  noise  from your speakers, turning other equipment or power circuits on/off, from mobile phones, etc -  maybe, don't worry, its not a big problem.
Class D with high efficiency speakers
Atmasphere - thanks for an informative answer, as always. I am not sure about the Dream Maker speakers, but it may be that they are designed for high output impedance from the amps (like your speakers) so that class D might sound a bit lean, compa...
Class D with high efficiency speakers
I am sure class D can sound great and it would be great to try, with my sensitive Dream Maker speakers (16 ohms, efficiency:  92 dB/1 watt, Voltage sensitivity:  89 dB/2.83 volts). If class D can lift these even further I am all ears. I want to c...
Class D with high efficiency speakers
I would not sell the OTL - wait until you’ve tried other types of amps, and give it time. I have Atma-sphere MA-1 v 3.2 monoblocs, mainly fed by the Io Eclipse. They are a daily joy in our system, with top level NOS driver and output tubes and cle...
Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue is an effects album
Thanks, all! Yes she is a great composer, musician and artist. Like Dianna Krall. Why are female artists so often overlooked by the men-mostly audiophile community? Even in 2023?
SUT - electrical theory and practical experience
rubandscrub - the cost effectivity is certainly an important aspect, like you write. I also have an ASR Mini Basis, now used mainly as a backup in case my main phono stage has problems. If your Denon carts have 0.2 - 0.3 mV output, I am not surpri...
What Does It Take To Surpass A SME V?
neonknight - my SME V was made in October 1999. In 2016 I asked SME about service and upgrade. Answer: unless something wrong, maybe not needed. But for 555 pounds they would do a full service + testing + new internal wire (silver litz van den Hul...
Patricia Barber - Cafe Blue is an effects album
I've grown to like her. Maybe she was wrongly produced, or sounded too hard, in the beginning. I have the Mobile fidelity LP box version of Cafe blue and the sound is great although the performance is somewhat icy. Mythologies is an interesting al...
What Does It Take To Surpass A SME V?
Just a little real life experience. For many years (1970s and 80s) I had a SME 3012 on a Thorens player. Then, I changed to a VPI HW-19, and the Souther / Clearaudio Triquartz parallell arm. Despite a huge amount of tweaking, this combination neve...
Candidates for best speakers in the $2000-5000 market
With your amp I would check out Audiokinesis speakers. A very interesting speaker concept, that can sound optimal with tube amps in a moderate / fairly large room. The point here is not just the speakers and their components, but how well they man...
