$40.000 speaker advise. Check out my list 6 - 1 - 4 - 5 not familiar with 2 and 3.Keep the preamp/amp for now.Definitely get decent speaker cables: Transparent, Purist, Synergistic, Audience Au24, Siltech, Acoustic Zen, Kubala-Sosna (Audioquest, Cardas, MIT, Blue Jeans, Signalcable, Monst...
Cartridge Leads Mark, I don't know why the spring loaded clips are shorter, maybe a different soldering arrangement. The $72 ones are the ones I was referring to. If you go to the vdH US distributor, http://www.bluebirdmusic.com/ they should be able to give you a...
Cartridge Leads Bd, I agree, but I was referring to the rhodium version of the HSL PCCE which, for some reason, doesn't show on their webpage AND is a lot more expensive. The gold-over-brass one shown, is too soft and indeed has the problems you mention.
Cartridge Leads The silver litz vdH leads are probably available thru Sumiko, since they're standard on SME IV and V tonearms. They're very good but a little bit difficult to bend/twist in tight spaces.Cardas leads are excellent but the spring clip versions are n...
PC & Dedicated Power Lines Questions Tbg: If your system is the one currently posted ;-) then I think you are doing the smart thing. I doesn't require high amperage; I'll bet it doesn't draw more than 500W with everything running. Grounding only the preamp (linestage) is a good way t...
PC & Dedicated Power Lines Questions Scott, I find the surge protection clamping circuits in most conditioners often affect sonics, but more important, they don't adequately protect your equipment from the really bad stuff (lightening strikes.)And as others already rightly pointed ou...
It was a good day at the thrift shop Sounds like the "old guy" was quicker on the trigger, LOL!
re: phono preamps; is vintage ss any good? A Mark Levinson 25S (the "S" model, not the regular 25) is still among the finest quiet, high gain phono pre's ever produced. Separate power supply. $3000 used if you can find one somebody's willing to part with.
VU Meter Needle Dead or Just Lying There? Fixable? Hi TI was talking with Terry this AM. He said that unit has been problem-free. He thinks it might just be a loose ribbon cable or other cable going to the front panel. Says you should open it up and check. Then give him a call if you can't find an...
VU Meter Needle Dead or Just Lying There? Fixable? Call or email Terry deWick and he can probably diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action including anything you could try yourself before actually taking it to a Mac repair person such as Terry himself. He is very friendly and h...
Can static electricity cause a blown fuse in amp? What kind of IC's are you guys using? Are they shotgun type (with floating shields?) and if they are, do all arrowheads point to the preamp (including the ones that go between pre and amp?) This is a solvable problem. I know, I live in Tucson wher...
Can static electricity cause a blown fuse in amp? The static charge is going thru your CD interconnects to the preamp signal inputs which amplify it enough to overload your amp's inputs. Make sure the CD player is properly grounded so the static is drained off right at the CD player.Same advice i...
Dust...It's Killing Me I throw a couple of those cool looking UAL dark blue lap blankets over my rack and TT at night or when not in use. I still leave all SS stuff turned on -- just keep the back of the rack open toward the wall. That's the simple solution (along w/ an...

Horns vs Ribbons vs Dyanamic For heaven sake, I would've thought by now everyone had this straight: "PLANAR" includes BOTH electrostatic (like MartinLogan) AND planar-magnetic (like Maggies -- or MAGNA-PLANAR, the company name? hello!) The two have VASTLY different amplifier ... |
