Carbon brushes are great! Here's a tip to take them from "great" to GREAT!!!:While you're brushing, and with your other hand, after licking a fingertip, grab something that's grounded! Too gross? Do this:Get a couple feet of "probe wire". That's t...
Effects of no ground in wall outlet
Safety AND performance! Most current audio gear rely on a good ground connections to shield the signal from RFI noise, prevent hum, and to drain off digital nasties. Do what Jimmdavis recommends. And analog, OY! Can't do without a good ground for ...
Optical or coaxial - which one better for digital
I was going to ask the exact same question Jeff just did (Toslink or ST?) and if your equipment accepts ST, I'd make the same recommendation he does.I have not found a coax or AES/EBU data cable that out-performs my Aural Symphonics Optimism V.2 S...
Primaluna Prologue One power tube rolling
I was going to suggest you try Telefunken 12AX7's but the Amperex are very similar (BTW, you don't HAVE to buy "Bugle Boys". All the Amperex/Holland tubes are the same, and they made them for a multitude of other brands/manufacturers: Hewlett Pack...
poweramp tube matching
Newbee, I recently read an article on the very point you raised, namely"when each tube can be individually biased doesn't that overcome the problem you bring up?"And the author explained why it doesn't compensate for the tube's not matching. I'll ...
Tube rolling, Macintosh MC275 Mk IV
"our hobby is based upon personal preference. "playing around" with 12 volt tubes may be a way of attaining a "sound" that is desired."I would think, in this case anyway, the "personal preference" part would come when selecting the amplifier in th...
poweramp tube matching
In a push-pull circuit (I'm guessing 85% of tube amps) if the pairs of push-pull tubes DON'T match, the weaker tube generally causes the stronger tube to wear faster, is what I've read..

Always check w/ the manufacturer first! There may be other issues that are not obvious..
Tube rolling, Macintosh MC275 Mk IV
Tennis, you can sometimes substitute differently numbered tubes in circuits without trouble (always check with the manufacturer first!) but then you'd be comparing apples to oranges sonically. Guitar players often substitute these lower gain tubes...
Tube rolling, Macintosh MC275 Mk IV
Another happy Mac owner (he has an MC2102):Hi Neil, Just got back from Jamaica and my NOS from Marty were waiting for me. I just rolled in the Telefunkens 12ax7's and I want to tell you....wow. The improvement is unbeleivable in all parameters, es...
general tonearm design question
You could test unipivots for azimuth stability by throwing on (just said that to make Doug cringe ;--) an SQ Quadraphonic record. Its groove not only deflects the stylus left-right-up-down, it TWISTS it CW and CCW!.
Turn on amp w/o speakers
My ARC manual said to bias without a signal, after a 15 minute warm-up, but nothing about removing the speaker load FWIW..
What are my options for voltage regulation?
Well, it's the old story, you get what you pay for:BTW,without you knowing it,I am reporting that your EP-15a listing(Nsgarch too) aided me in getting one! I included the Exact Power Ultra-Pure to go fully balanced. THIS combo is the the biggest i...
good old tuners going obsolete
So roughly when do you see "worthless" actually happening? One year, five years?

Downunder, I'm currently A-B'ing some Mullards and Telefunkens in the 12AT7 positions (see original post) and I'll report back. They seem very nice and open -- it might be a toss-up. We'll see (I mean, hear!)
