How to best isolate TT from vibration?
(Architects always speak the truth. If we lie, the roof collapses!).
Reference level playback
Setting the *correct* volume level is indeed an art; but set it and forget it? Forget it!! That ain't no art . . . . . The trick, the *art* if you will, is finding the level that in your judgement (and hopefully based on your own real-life experie...
Tube rolling, Macintosh MC275 Mk IV
Recently, I've been using some 5751 tubes instead of the 12AX7's (see Joe's Tube Lore: http://www.nickdangerous.com/misc/mghead/joestubelore.htm )I thought I'd give some 5751 tubes a spin. Joe basically dislikes ALL 12AX7's and considers the 5751'...
Wherefore Belt Drive?
Cabeau, what's your favorite oil(s)? I've been using the vdH zirconium oxide stuff in my Goldmund DD and I *think* it's lowered the noise floor a lot. . . . . . . . .
Wherefore Belt Drive?
Rwwear -- do you mean the Dual changers, or the decks? I don't know much about the old Dual/Thorens/EMT decks. And I can't remember if my old Dual changers had some spring in them somewhere or not..
Wherefore Belt Drive?
Lewm is correct (AR predating Linn) but guess what? I owned a Rek-O-Kut suspended chassis belt drive table before AR was even born!!And the main advantage of cheap, (ie not Thorens) idler drives was they had the "muscle" to operate changer mechani...
Am I going crazy or?
The other parameter you people are forgetting is supply/demand. If you've been waiting for a year (or more!) for a used/discontinued item to appear, you're not going to quibble over a higher price than you were hoping/expecting to pay. In fact, if...
If you had to have an HDCD DAC which one ?
Bruce, is that a current product?
If you had to have an HDCD DAC which one ?
Any Wadia DAC will decode (recognize) HDCD because Wadia DAC's use software to convert digital data to an analog signal, as opposed to the "brick wall" or other Burr-Brown type chip found in most DAC's. And so the software processes any signal it ...
Tonearm DIN question
Wow James - I was all ready to be shocked that someone actually made such an adaptor, but the item you mention has a "real" mini-DIN (same as a keyboard, mouse or S-video connector ;-) Unfortunately, it's not the same as the "mini-DIN" on a tonear...
Sound of Mcintosh MC275 vs. MC7205 thx
Tennis, I'd leave any KT88 changes for last (if at all). Now if what you're after is slow and syrupy (we say 'schmaltzy' in my neighboorhood ;--) I think you can't do better than NOS Mullard 12AX7's (the UK ones, not the Holland ones). And if you ...
Sound of Mcintosh MC275 vs. MC7205 thx
Tennis, the most sonic bang for the buck is replacing the 12AX7's -- V-1,2,5. (If you run balanced, V-1 is out of the signal path, that's why I asked ;--) For a beautiful, well rounded sound with air, sparkle and detail, I'd recommend Telefunkens....
Sound of Mcintosh MC275 vs. MC7205 thx
Tennis, are you driving your amp with balanced or SE IC's?
Correct imaging
You need three identical spikes/speaker, unless the speaker manufacturer suggests otherwise..
Tonearm DIN question
Thom, if you're talking about modifying the TT (or is it the tonearm itself!) to match the cable, wouldn't it be easier, cheaper and less invasive to reterminate the cable to match the TT. I don't understand your logic, or am I missing something?.
