But if it rings when you strike it, wouldn't it also ring in some way at certain frequencies? I dumped my metal rack for concrete blocks and was stunned at the difference. Improved solidity and blackness with piano notes seemingly more stable.  
Balance knob ..
Move some stuff from behind the right speaker to behind the left speaker. That way both sides will be equally compromised. Seriously, would a mix of bass traps and room treatments/reflectors behind both speakers help. Maybe pull the speakers a few...
