If you could just pick one instrument that you think sounds best on your speakers
"What you think sounds most realistic? "  Really? Nothing comes close so I really try not to think about it. To me recorded music is at best a reminder, no more.  I think audio's main weakness is its inability to  replicate large scale music in th...
Classical composers, symphonies
twoleftears, I have more than two performances. :-)But I must admit I rarely listen to them now. Farberman’s is, at this stage of my life, or it could be argued, any stage of my life, too long! :-)Just for fun I put on Botstein’s (on Telarc) as it...
One speaker observation from the New York Hifi show.
rvpiano, Re GE, I find it not so strange (other than 8" does sound a bit close to me).  Bass is, to many, the reason that distance of placement of the speaker from the front  wall is important. That is a common problem we all share. But, the impor...

rvpiano, Not necessarily for your benefit, but FWIW as it does relate to others, re 'side to side' imaging, it is important when evaluating this to remember the 'stereo' construct does not provide for any 'in phase' stereo image to appear outside ...
Songs for Speaker Placement
'Depth of Image' by Opus 3 is IMHO the best recording I've ever heard in reproducing depth of image. It is on LP or CD and may be hard to find now. But I have heard it on a modest system carefully set up and it was so holographic as to be almost s...

If you have positioned your speakers too near the wall behind them, as many folks seem to do (from the system photos I see) I believe your observations  are probably valid, certainly are to you. However, if you bring your speakers well out into th...
EL 34 vs. KT 88 ---- What's the difference?
Lance-Baker1, You sound knowlegable. Lead they way. Give us the words.
Classical Music for Aficionados
Re observations about Volodos - Unless you have an aversion to Moupou's music don't overlook Volodos rendition of Mompou's music for solo piano (what else?). I've enjoyed it every bit as much as his Schubert and Brahms recordings.
Speakers positionning
FWIW I said it wrong. The toe in would be 22.5 degrees PAST CENTER or the on-axis position.
Speakers positionning
turnbowm9, At the risk of just restating the obvious, in case you stopped your toe in process in route to an optimum set up---One of the benefits of toe in is to ameliorate the effects of side wall reflections, but as you have noted you pick up so...
BEST FEMALE VOCAL EVER
Yep. I was being a bit PC, i.e. not being too effusive, but she is my favorite vocalist by a mile. Other can be beautiful etc, but she can bring tears to my eyes! :-)
How would you introduce tubes into this SS system?
Jackalope, Steve wrote to me and I responded. I've agreed to send him these amps for repair if he can take the project on. I'll let you know what happens.
Do speaker cables need a burn in period?
I'll be dammed! That certainly explains my experience using speaker cables and IC's. Took a long time to figure out why they sounded bright/edgy 'today' and perfectly fine 'tomorrow'. Unlike electronics though, I did not experience a reversal in t...
BEST FEMALE VOCAL EVER
Overall vocalist, I don't know, but I can certainly pick a favorite song/vocalist combo. Eva Cassidy's version of Over the Rainbow. Not a tough call for me!
How would you introduce tubes into this SS system?
In your search for an alternative integrated amp don't overlook the Primaluna Dialogue series. The older Dialogue 2's are easily in your price range. The newer ones are probably obtainable for something in the mid 20's. I've seen the 2's up for sa...
