Tube magic in solid state?
All you want is a SS amp that actually sounds like a tube amp? I have yet to hear, or hear of one, that actually does. There isn't anything special about the BAT. This could be said about many high quality tube amps. I must admit though that many ...
Tube Amps
Tube amps are really not that hard to use or maintain, but there is somewhat more effort involved than with SS. For your first amp I would recommend that you get one that is fairly idiot proof but that allows you to maintain your self. Individual ...
9 gauge vs 12 gauge Jumper of same brand cable
The short lenght of the cable involved would negate any differences due to the differences in gauge. I would just use the 12 gauge.
Vintage tubes skyrocketing in price
The only answer I can think of off hand is to thoroughly explore current production tubes before you venture off into NOS. You might be surprised that in many instances the differences are not that great and perhaps not worth the extra money. I've...
Noise in left channel of Audio Innovations ai500
Its not clear (to me) if you reversed your small tubes. What you have described is a sound consistent with a small tube's noise floor - some are lower than others, or with a small tube that may be starting to go south.
Powering off Equipment-Silly question
My gut reaction is that it will make no difference, however if your amp is a tube amp and it has a slow start function you might be bypassing this aspect of its circuitry. Dumb question - can you have the face plate removed and take it to a woodwo...
ultimate list of opera recordings
You seem to have a fair amount of expertise, why don't you share with us your list of favorite operas and their performances. I'm sure others will follow suit. One of my favorites is LaBoheme with Freni conducted by Shippers on EMI, but I have an e...
Need more soundstage depth with Spacedeck and Ono
I suspect your problem may be in set up, I'm not reassured that you you think your dealer set it up properly. If you have the equipment necessary I would check out the set up parameters. Pay attention to VTA, something which is often overlooked du...
Speakers for vocalists
If your interest in voice is tonal as opposed to high resolution/pin point stereo imaging look at the Spendor line - the up side is they are know for their ability to portray voices well and they are easy to drive. If you also want pin point imagi...
Taking the analog plunge...
FWIW check out the Nottingham line of TT's. I'm impressed with the design of the Spacedeck and Arm and the user reports have been very favorable. This will probably be my next table. Others here recommend Teres a lot. Then there is always VPI and ...
tubes for CAL Alpha
I absolutely prefer EI12Ax7's over all others that I have tried. Crystal clear highs, smooth mid range, excellent bass. Not romantic not cold. Amoung new production tubes these are my 1st choice. Others that I have used include Sovtek (old style a...
Soundstage and voices lean to the left side????
If you play CD's or a tuner, are you getting this same off balance? If so you might just have a small difference in your hearing ability which can easily be allowed for by turning the balance control if it occurs only on some records, or if it is ...
What is "biwiring"?
Its all bi-wiring, just different ways to skin the kitty. And some folks would suggest that you might be the "kitty". Many manufacturers don't provide for bi-wiring and some that do suggest that its to please customers who believe there is differe...
Tubed integrated for PBN Montana SP 3?
Don't know about the Unico, other than what I've read here and in Audio Asylum. But I did investigate it and I choose the PrimaLuna Prologue One, for just the reasons you mentioned. Its all tube and has only the basic functions, but its very well ...
Packaging floorstanding speaker-tips?
Here is a thought - double boxes but use plastic wrap and expandable foam to isolate the speaker from the box. Use thin plastic tarp or heavy duty trash bags to protect the speaker, and if you like to create a lining for the box. Done right, this ...
