need tube advice from tube preamp owners.
Bigjoe, The type and brand of tubes does make a large difference in the sound of a pre amp (or any other tube devise) - no doubt. If I may suggest, most specific recommendations you will get when you ask on this forum will be for NOS tubes, and no...
need tube advice from tube preamp owners.
Bigjoe, The point in my post was, first of all, you should let your amp break in and become accoustomed to what it sounds like in stock form. Once you have done that you can decide how to change its sonic signature - thats what most folks are doin...
Krell amps and Tube Preamps - enemies?
Rwwear, What would you expect from a newbee who still listens to a 20 year old pre-amp and 10 year old amps? :-) My point was only that while you might be able to hear the capacitor it might not really make any substantive difference sonically spe...
Krell amps and Tube Preamps - enemies?
If there were such a beast as a SS amp which really sounded like tubes then the manufacturer would get a corner on the SS market (IMHO)! Some solid state amps that I have heard that come close that won't cost an arm and a leg are made by Muse and ...
Quad 988 in 15' x 12' room
Make sure that the wall behind the speakers does not directly reflect the sound. Your speakers will sound best when the back wave is radiating off a dispersive surface. Three feet is probably a minimum for good soundstaging. You might also want to...
need tube advice from tube preamp owners.
You are really putting the cart ahead of the horse. Let your new pre-amp break in first then listen to it carefully for a few months and decide what about its sound you would like to improve, then post a question like "My pre-amp has rolled off hi...
Introducing Tubes?
Paul, For less that 1K you can pick up a EAR 834L. This is a very basic, simple to operate, preamp using 3 tubes which have very very long life (5yrs at 24/7 +/-). Tonally it is much like your Tylers - smooth and musical, but not dull and boring. ...
Speaker choices, $1000-2000 Smooth & Musical
Add Tyler Linbrook Monitors to your list - they are very smooth and musical, yet are quite detailed. A pleasure to listen to..........
A switch to RB300 arm on alexandria?
Well, I'm not an expert mind you, but I believe that you may not need a new arm board. What you need to find out is the pivot to spindle distance of the two arms. If they are the same, you're in hog heaven. What might be a problem for you is the d...
what's the next upgrade
Twl, Don't you think that in this price range the money would be better spent on source components? Far more difference in the sound of different components in this price range than in the differences brought by tweeks, IMHO. Sales slow?
Introducing Tubes?
Improbability, FWIW everything in the chain adds distortion to some extent! Some tubes can cover-up some of the distortion added by CD systems and other SS stuff! Take that!!!! And that!!!!! :-)
Introducing Tubes?
I think a tubed pre-amp is the best place start. But before you go there best ask yourself exactly what are you trying to get. All tube pre-amps don't sound the same. Some are warm and some are bright, most have a more liquid sound. Don't underest...
Krell KSA 50 vs. todays ss amps?
Yuri, Read the reviews in Stereophile on line about the KSA 50S - they describe the differences between it and the original KSA. It seems that the reviewer thought that the original was a warmer and more rounded amp, more musical if you will. The ...
Von Schweikert v. Tyler Question
Drrasta, Regarding imaging with the Linbrooks - I agree with your comments, however I wonder if you have experimented with toe in a lot. I came to the Linbrooks from Dynamics that had to be pointed straight ahead, they were just to hot on axis. Ty...
Rothwell In-Line Attenuators?
I'm using a pair on one of my amps to lower the gain from the pre-amp. Can't tell they are in the loop.
