Speaker fed high power then switched to low power?
Question 1 - No - using a different amp would make no difference in and of itself, everything else being equal, except for the power differential.Q2 - No.Q3 - Essentially once broken in the effect is permanent, although some claim to hear improvem...
Zu Druid IV - the real deal?
Hey don't get on Bartockfan's case. He is still at a point in his learning curve where he doesn't understand the relationships involving gain and speaker efficiency, amp output impedence and the speakers impedence curve let alone being able to act...
Taking audio too seriously?
Life would be a huge bore if you didn't have the passion to be obsessive about something! Why not audio? Whats your passion?
DK Design VS.1 Reference mkII - Optimization
Tvad, I'll take a stab at the vibration/top issue, by way of example. I have a CDP with case vibrations induced by the transformer. These vibrations are sufficient to rattle the tube innards which increases any potential they have to be microphoni...

Tom, Your explanation is as good as any I've seen for the reason this amp sounds best with the top off. Tubes are microphonic to some degree and the less vibrations (from any source) the better. Removing the top would certainly eliminate one poten...

Aball, I was wondering when some one would ask. I lack a digital camera. I'm still a film addict. Go figure, I'm still a tube addict as well. Besides who ever pays any attention to the advise of a newbee anyway. :-)
Differences in SQ between EL34, KT-88 & 6550 Tubes
So much of the SQ depends on the amp the tube is used in that any comments have to be very generic and unspecific. That said, I have found the EL34 usually has a warmer mid-range than the other 2, the KT88 has a warmer upper bass/midrange and a ta...
Loose tube sockets
Check the size of the pins on the tubes. They can vary. If you are running power tubes with pins smaller than the old ones be aware it could cause a run-a-way tube tooverheat/short out and damage your amp. If the pins are in fact the same size the...
old amps verus new
Yep! Power, tone, and resolution come immediately to mind. However, some of the old tube stuff if properly overhauled can sound just fine in undemanding situations with the right speakers.

Plato, You can comment on 'break-in' all you want, in fact both of us have already done so recently on the thread on that subject. I respect your observations. I'm referring to folks who arbitrarily deny the existence of break-in charging it all o...

Never have figured out why folks don't pay maximum attention to set up and acoustics - seems that many, especially the inexperienced, feel that the solution to all of their problems is in the components. They really have no idea what they are miss...
New to electrostatics, need advise for Quad 2805
Glai, I've set up Quads (ESL63's) in a 19x13 ft room and the back wave issue is very important and not just from a bass potential because of boundry re-inforcement. The whole frequency range is dependent on the distance from the back wall and how ...

Tvad, What is needed is a magnetic cover - that will absorb those electro-magnetic waves and they won't just bounce about in the amp. If you don't believe in electro-magnetic waves or fields just look for the Aurora Borealis. Maybe there is a look...
How to handle infant mortality of Svet 6550C?
Reylon, Did you note Jim M's comments re 'round holes' on old Svetlana's? They were not made by Sovtek. KIS's comments were inaccurate.
Tubeguys:How much "tube sound" from tube players?
John, I'm amazed that you find the Rowlands more 'tubey' than your CAT's. Are you just referring to tone, that is the Rowlands are warmer? I'm dying of curiosity why you would be buying all those 6550's if otherwise. :-) I suspect that you are usi...
