Tube Nube questions
I allow 24 hours break in time, especially for power tubes. You'll get a good feeling for tone changes with small tubes after a couple of hours, but power tubes really need a bit more.Re-installing old tubes in an amp do not require breakin beyond...
Tube rolling and SAC Glowmaster KT88?
Hiker363, I'm confused by your comments regarding the Svetlana tubes. SED KT88's with a Winged C logo are made in St Petersburg, and Svetlana KT88's with an S logo which were made in St Petersburg preceeded them and are the same tube. The latter h...
Favored KT-88's for Sonic Frontiers amp?
I'd take Chris' advise, even though I've never used those tubes in my 160's. This amp, as least my unmodified one, has high plate voltage and needs rugged tubes. A lot of KT88's aren't up to the task. I've used SED KT88's but didn't like the tone ...
Primaluna tube amps...
I've been using PrimaLuna products (PL One, Three, and Five)for over three years. They are far from CRAP! and at least competitive in their price range. Well built, very flexible tone wise with tube selection, and hassle free with either the units...
Silverline Sonatina II - MODs?
Well, this is speculation based on the results of my Bolero's which have the Esotar tweeter in them. Changing to the Esotars would be a mod if done by Alan that you could sell me. But I suspect it would be expensive and you'd never get your money ...
An honest opinion about upgrading?
Have you maxed out set up and room acoustics control. If not that would take you a long way towards your goal. FWIW I doubt that moving to tube mono blocks will do it for you, but a good ss amp might help if you don't mind the differences between ...
How large is your music collection?
I've long ago thinned down my LP's to the essential and these are now more for occasional reference than anything else (my analogue system is in the closet just now). Haven't done this with digital recordings which were accumulated when my decisio...
Tube Preamp/ McCormack Amp impedance matching
Foster 9, To add to your burden - some pre-amps with 2 outputs have them configured so that both outputs cannot be used at the same time to drive two different amps at the same time. I have a pre-amp configured as such and when you add a 2d system...
Need recommendation for LVB Symphony 9
I don't know if you can find this on an individual disc, but if you can stand buying a budget CD set, I'd want to have Bernstein's VPO performances on my shelf. His Beethoven is excellent! It is IMHO joyous music. Toe tapping stuff! Not the somber...
Tube Preamp/ McCormack Amp impedance matching
Whether it is optimum or not is ultimately determined by your ears, your expectations, and your speakers (not listed). I agree it sounds like an adequate match on paper but there is much we do not know. I would forego the pursuit of impedence matc...
Hum problem - please help...
A hum which increases with increases in the volume control on the pre-amp is usually going to be found in a component ahead of the pre-amp, for example a tube (often a source, a failing tube) in a phono stage or out board unit, or a failing tube i...
Lacking Soundstage - Vandersteen 2C
Livin, some excellent observations above, especially that your room is too small to expect to achieve really excellent soundstaging. A couple of observations, things that I have done successfully in the past. In addition to triangulating a speaker...
Loss of Sound Quality when both systems are ON
This 'problem' may be a result of the design of the pre-amp. My ARC SP10 does exactly the same thing. I can not use two outputs to drive two systems at the same time. Connecting a seperate system to the second set of outputs 'loads' the other. Alm...
Your Favorite Traditional Ballad
'Traditional' ballads - i.e. ballads out of history or ballads which meet some contemporary definition? If the former, and if you can admit to liking a bit of 'country' music once in a while (I love 'folk' music which has its origins in the British...
Cayin A50t biasing problem
Larry, I doubt that this is an issue, but are you taking your readings off your meter using the DC ma setting? That would make a big difference in your readings. Other than that I'm baffled right along with you.
