Can you lower gain requirements on tube amp?
Tholt, re DAC/CDP output voltage - I am presently running 4 digital sources. One with 2v, one with 2.2v, one with 3.5v and the latter varible at 2,4 & 6v. I have never measured the difference in db's at the speaker between each output level so...
Can you lower gain requirements on tube amp?
You can buy a different amp with lower input sensitivity. You can't change the Cary to get higher output other than the triode/UL option afforded. KT88's are high output tubes so rolling them won't make much or any difference. You can buy an active...
Best Integrated Under $3000
FWIW I would not have, and still can't, respond to your thread intelligently. The is no universal best, so to respopnd to your question I would need 1) To have listened to the equipment you mentioned under controlled circumstances using identital ...
DACs and reproduced sound
I think the quoted portion of your post is vacuous. Every component in the chain processes the signal it recieves, digital or analogue. Each has an analogue output which has its own sound which is not going to be an exact copy of the input signal ...
Sumiko MMT Setup
To properly set up a new cartridge you need a protractor. Your arm is all ready set up on the TT so you don't need a template unless it was improperly installed on an unsuitible armboard. What I do with my MMT arm is raise the arm until it is paral...
More of a Tube Sound In a Tube CD player
I think it would be interesting to hear from you exactly how you define 'tube sound'. I have 1 ss and 3 tubed units and I don't think its hard to detect the differences, including the contribution of the tubes BUT I also think it is a relatively m...
More on ss/vs tubes vs hybrids
Tubes in the DAC is fine and IMHO affects mostly things like resolution and tone and perhaps a tad of liquidity. Tubes in a pre-amp is pretty much the same. Tubes in the amp output stage caps all of this off with a sense of spaciality which is, in...
ARC vs LFD
I think your wish* is almost universal. (* Having SS stuff that sounds as 'good' as tubes and doesn't require maintenance.) But if you've become fully appreciative of the value of tube sound you may never acclimate to SS and regret your decision t...
phono preamp crackling
OK I'm a dump shit with a strong preferences! :-)That said, have you tried disconnecting the IC's from your TT (cartridge) to the phono stage? If not try that, leaving the IC's to the pre-amp in place and seeif that changes anything. The phono sta...
phono preamp crackling
Noisy tubes? Phono stages usually require quality LN (low noise) tubes and crackling is one of the symptoms of noisy tubes. What kind and quality tubes do you have in the stage? How old are they?
Hybrid vs. Straight Tubes
I think the real 'sound' of tubes is found in the amp output not in a couple of tube drivers in front of a SS output. I also think that the difference between a 40wt tube amp and a 100 wt ss amp is relatively nominal. Don't forget that this differ...
Help My Krell 700cx isn't working right.
Caveat, I don't know much of anything about the Krell stuff's operating parameters, but it sound to me like the amp is detecting too much DC output from the pre-amp and is shutting itself down. FWIW if it helps get you pointed in the right direction.
Is extremely accurate "VTA" adjustment necessary?
Re Gandy's comments regarding the Rega - Wasn't one of the downsides of using a Rega TT/Arm was that there was no provision for simple repeatible adjustible VTA? If so, has anyone questioned Gandy's motive for the white paper? It is obvious (I thi...
Martin Logan SL3's
Wow, how to answer this question without writing a book about speaker design and set up. :-)Generic panel speakers lack a 'point source' driver for the high(er) frequencies and the high frequencies radiate off the entire surface of the speaker whi...
What do you see as the downside of tubes?
Dav65mus, Be careful what you wish for, especially if you like what you presently are using. The road to audio hell is paved by folks trying to make a meaningful positive change to get only a small, or any, meaningful improvement. Different perhap...
