Bringin' that thrift-store smell home
If it's the smell I think you mean - mildew, musty - just get the album covers in a hot place with lots of air circulation for a bit. Alternately, get a bunch of those plasic sleeves...
RFI issues in phono stage-one channel only ??
Is the RFI problem channel (its cable, for example) closer to a window? Is one side's cable looped (acts as an antenna)? Try turning the phono or pre 90 degrees... Stuff like that can impact in-city RFI problems. Where I used to live, there was so...
Does equipment get old?
I've heard that the older, paper caps (used in mcintosh for one) can leak over time and need to be replaced.
SACD BREAKING-IN EXPERIENCE................
My experience with my 777 was the same as Jadem6
I have Virgo II's, and love em......
I haven't A-Bed, but some people say the IIIs are a big step up...
Music industry troubles caused by radio?
Check out KCMU.org - it's the local (Seattle) college station, and it's available online with various kinds of hi-rez streaming. If you want to hear non-commercial pop/rock (as well as a great African music show - Best Ambience), it's worth lookin...
SACD - M. Davis - So What
I had to break in both the redbook and SACD circuits on my 777. It took a long time but it's a dramatic improvement. Try your A-B comparison in a month or two (and if you only have a few sacds, leave them on repeat play to facilitate the break-in ...
LP pressings..which country or label...
All the above is right on... I would add more warnings about Japanese pressings. While always quieter, they sometimes lack the punch of their American versions (which are, alas, almost always noisier, especially with things like prestige and blue ...
Linn- Ekos or PS Audio 300
Get the lingo - the improvement is not subtle. I heard 2 lp12s (lingo-ed and not) side by side and the lingo extended the bass by what seemed to be an entire octave. The psa (which I also have) is great and you definitely want power treatment for ...
Mahler...OK I'm hooked
Dietrich Fischer-Diskau singing Kindertotenlieder on DG - easy to find used and, in my book, essential Mahler. Heartbreakingly beautiful/sad - Mahler lost at least one child and this was his response... Also Das Lied Von der Erde (female vocal wit...
What music is not derivative?
radiohead's recent stuff (kid a, amnesiac) is pretty original. Also, Sigur Ros (Icelandic group, just kids really) is non-derivative. That's just as far as rock goes, which I think is what you're asking. But if you get into more experimental stuff...
REGA Planet vs Jupiter
people are selling the sony 777 (not multi-channel) for under $1500 these days. After it's broken in, it's a great 'red book' player as well as a great transport if you want to improve your dac later, and if you should ever want to buy a SACD disc...
What is a good intro to "Mahler"?
I've always loved Kindertotenlieder, sung by Dietrich Fischer-Diskau, on DG - very easy to find on vinyl. Gorgeous songs, gorgeous orchestral accompaniment, unlike anything else out there!
Stones on SACD - Tempting?
maybe they can actually do a good version of Exile On Main Street - but I doubt it. If the Virgin reissue, remastered by Bob Ludwig, still sucks, I'm guessing that the source material is just hopeless. I second the 'silk purse from a cow's ear' co...
Any Proac Supertower Owners Out There?
I guess that's what it's called... It's the soft rubber which is just inside the rim. And many thanks for all your input so far!
