A Tough Question
I know I'm in an extreme minority on this one, but I thought Fight Club was pretty lame from the standpoint of actual ideas, in essence a sort of dumbed down Jungianism. We're bound to have changing feelings about our 'stuff', especially stuff we'...
Need advice on interconnects: make a difference?
Be careful - cables have been called 'tone controls' by some; perceived differences aren't necessarily improvements. There is definitely a big difference between silver and copper. I'd do a comparison between those first to see if you have a prefe...
Do we break in our componets or do our componets ?
Digital stuff really does benefit from being left on so it is warm - that could be a significant source of what you report. Also, when I bought my sony 777 sacd, it didn't sound any better than the (much cheaper) digital front end I had, but over ...
Commens on the McIntosh MR7083 AM-FM tuner
some people consider the 7083 mcintosh's best solid state tuner ever (mr71 for tube) - especially for its bass.
Make me feel better
You could switch over to an all-satellite radio system, never having to mess with that fussy vinyl (or make any significant musical decisions) ever again! (joke)
What tubes for Mac MR-71 tuner?
Before you go doing that, check the tubes out to see if any test bad. Tuners aren't that hard on tubes and they may be just fine. Probably the best thing you could do before you start 'tuberolling' is get the unit calibrated. That could make a hug...
Power Cord for Sony SCD-1
nororiously long break-in on these! don't make any judgments about the player for a while. plus, you need an equal amount of time to burn in both the redbook and the SACD. the sound you describe fits exactly the sound of an unbroken-in unit.
Whats the best used tuner for under 1000
Mcintosh mr-71 (vintage, tube) sounds gorgeous and is sensitive too.
Suggestions for FM Antenna Mounting
from what I've heard about antenna mounting, the antenna should definitely be above the metal of your roof (which is probably blocking the stations coming from that direction)
Is there a cd player that sounds close to an LP?
I used to use the cd63 in my system (as a transport). It isn't a great transport unfortunately. If you do get a dac, which is the cheapest way to do what you want, you'll want to pick up a reclocking device ($100, used). That being said, I think t...
Down to 3 speakers, and I'am still confused
I was recently comparing the GPs and the N804s as well (and Audio Physic virgos...). My conclusion was that if I only listened to Norah Jones and Patricia Barber, I'd be happy with the GPs, but if you ever want to listen to rock, go with the N804s...
B&W Nautilus 802 vs. ProAc Responce 2.5
I believe I've read that the proacs are more efficient - have you compared the #s?
What Instrument do You Play?
Indian (east) stringed instruments: surbahar (bass sitar) and rudra vina (archaic ancestor of sitar family), and tablas (Indian hand drums) . Playing an instrument comes in handy when you're auditioning equipment: if you have a recording of your i...
The Flaming Lips are Go Manifesto
An interesting 'audiophile' aside here: if you can get hold of the vinyl of 'bulletin', do so and compare it with the cd. I found a copy ($11 for a double album!) at tower and it's really quite different sounding than the cd. I don't think it's ju...
best upgrade for 'standard' LP12
the lingo adds what seems like a whole octave to the low end - big improvement (albeit expensive). I heard 2 lp12s side by side, one with and one without - it was quite a demo!also, those ringmats (in place of the linn felt mat) make the sound a l...
