Large speakers plus EQ, what have you done?
My system is vintage. The bass has been ok, very good with some songs and lacking with others. Have been looking for a vintage EQ, while also thinking about getting the Loki Max.  After reading stuff all over the web, everyone said recap the cros...
Should I replace the crossover capacitors in my vintage AR 3a speakers?
Interesting conversation. Have restored a few sets of vintage speakers. Always replace the XO caps. most of the time, don't even test them, just replace.  Every time it has been a night and day difference for the better! It always opens the speak...
Question on Speaker Placement
Find a track you really  like that has full dynamic range. Place tape on the floor where your speakers are. Move them all around, each time listen to that song. Place tape where you think things work, repeat till you find the "sweet spot" When y...
Realistically Speaking.....
Picked up my power amp from CL, drove 3 hours each way to pick it up. Original owner, never touched, very well taken care of.  Funny when I got there, he told me, there has been a ton of interest, and the price went up $200! But it was still a go...
What devices have you found useful when inspecting your stylii for cleanliness?
I just use my iPhone, put it in camera mode, then zoom in.
??? Full Loom vs Mix ???
Full loom, all my cables are from Blue Jeans, most of that is they are local to me.  Would like to try out a lot of other cables, but don't have the time, effort and cash to mess with all of it. Right now, everything sounds "good" not sure what n...
How do you pick your gear? Tips and insights are welcome.
Usually I purchase what I know, what has some familiarity. Had a Marantz HT receiver for 10 years. When that stopped working, got another Marantz to replace it, but went a couple models higher.  Same generally goes for my 2ch, got something cheap...
Faint buzz in speakers
If this was my system, it would be rewired, use different outlets. If anything is 2 prong, instead of 3 prong, swap the cord around. On 2 prong power plug, swapping the plug around can have profound sound differences.  Of course make sure there a...
55” or 65” TV Screen Size and Your Speakers: Please Join Survey
Always get the bigger TV, always! Every time you watch it, you will be asking yourself if you should have got the bigger one. You are totally overthinking this.I would have a bigger one, but my better half has a thing about the TV hanging over the...
Is Rega the easiest turntable to set up....
There are a ton of TT's that come mostly pre-setup.  Pro-Ject Techniques MO-Fi That's just off the top of my head. Think if you go to any local Stereo store, they will setup the TT for you for free if you buy from them. My local places will do...
Pop album that has stood the test of time
Love Easy Street! Spend most of my disposable income there. Not sure Sinead O'Conner is pop? How do we even design pop anymore? Pop to me is Britney Spears, that kind of stuff.  Yes, Sinead has held up, anything my 14yo listens to has stood the t...
Receiver Too Weak?
Sadly, I think you need more receiver, it's under 100w @ 2 ch, usually if you drive more channels the power will be even less. Your speakers have low sensitivity, so they need more power to sing.  You didn't really say if it's music or movies tha...
Burn Twetter Speaker
Might also want to pull out the crossovers and take a looks. If the same tweeter keeps blowing there might be something wrong with the XO. Depending on how old the speakers are, the XO might be worth rebuilding, or at least re-capping.
What is your favorite budget streamer?
MNX10, it does it all and it's simple, has good software, supports all the streaming services nativity. When I was looking to add a budget streamer to my vintage system, this one ticked all the boxes for me.  My only issue is, got the silver one,...
30 yr old speakers- time to replace drivers?
If the speakers are all working, with no defects, not sure it's worth touching.  However, the XO might be in need of an update. yes, caps can last decades, even out of spec can work almost perfectly. Just replaced the caps in my XO's, while my sp...
