Amp vs powered speaker confusion….
By definition, hobbyists in any hobby -- whether audio, photography, cooking or whatever -- like experimenting with things.  The mere fact that we are all here on an audio forum indicates that we like playing with and talking about all things audi...
Which LS3/5a?
@bobheinatz  -- not directly, but having heard various versions of the LS3/5a over the years, there is no doubt in my mind that the new Spendor has the same wonderful midrange of the LS3/5a plus the advantages mentioned above.  So, count me a happ...
Which LS3/5a?
I first heard the LS3/5a (the first, 15 ohm version) when I lived in London in 1979 and was much enchanted with the sound, though I didn't buy a pair.   Fast forward to 2022, and I was considering a set of the current Falcons -- I just didn't have...
Dallas DFW speaker crossover repair gurus that you'd trust
@dtximages -- not to belabor the point, but once you have the crossover schematic, any competent tech should be able to determine if what you have in your speakers matches that design, and fix it if it doesn't match.  Even sophisticated passive cr...

@dtximages -- I'd suggest the most important thing is to get your hands on a schematic of the original crossover design and compare that to the network in the speaker now.  Hard to know what lead to the use of wire nuts, but that can be fixed by a...
Speaker Suggestions $30K Sasha DAW competitor?
@plaw -- "... had a salesman once tell me...." That's a great opening line for a statement!   Actually, one of the issues with how recordings sound involves vocals.  I find vocals the most common source of harsh, spitty or forward sound on recor...
Speaker Suggestions $30K Sasha DAW competitor?
@plaw -- "...Only happens on some songs." So, you really like your speakers but have a few songs that sound screechy.  It's no secret that there are albums out there that just aren't well recorded.  Or, they were mixed and mastered using studio m...

Is there more of a story here than what's been told so far?  Capacitors are simple to replace and coils almost never go bad. Unless burnt, resistors also rarely go bad and are should be easy to replace.  The only issue sometimes is getting access ...
OHM A'S are they rare?
Ohm As were rare, and any that still exist would need to be rebuilt in order to work.  Ohm Speakers no longer rebuilds either the A or F models (I owned a pair of Fs back in the 70s) though they will offer to replace the original drivers with thei...
Room correction room system vs ears….
Here's a though -- perhaps invest in a room measurement microphone ($100 give or take) and some free room measurement software for your PC (Room EQ Wizard) and see what the frequency response in your room is right now before doing anything.  Next,...
Amp match for Chartwell LS6?
The BBC classic designs match well with tube amps.  I used to have a pair of Spendor SP1/2Es that I ran with an Image Audio amp with KT88s. It was a great match.  These days, in a second system, I have a LSA VT-70 (35 watts/ch with EL34 outputs) i...
Primaluna or not Primaluna
Haven't seen this one mentioned yet --- the LSA VT-70 from Underwood Audio.  I bought one recently and am really enjoying it.  Comes with EL-34 tubes but you can also use 6550s or KT88s.  Bias is easy with built-in meters.  It uses SS rectificatio...
Space Tech Preamplifier
@mdrone -- what are you looking for in a preamp? Lots of variables to consider -- overall sound characteristics, phono or not, bass/treble or not, price, other features, appearance, and so on.  Or are you an "I'll know it when I see it" kind of guy?
I don't get LRS and cheap Ayima AO7 amp
One more thought regarding the "appearance" angle.  I had a client some years back whose only products were high-end writing pens. Their cheapest pen was $3,000, and their most expensive cost $85,000.  I don't think the pens wrote any better than ...
