Headphones vs speakers….
Two more thoughts -- first, ever try any planar headphones?  I recently picked up a pair of Hifiman Sundaras and have been very pleased with their performance. Overall, I like them better than the Stax phones I used to have.  Note they have this m...
Headphones vs speakers….
For me, headphones versus speakers in a room are two completely different experiences. Rather like comparing a roadster to a luxury sedan -- each has their attractive qualities, but which you like better at any given moment depends on what mood yo...
Changes in my life, new system, need new speakers
I have a pair of Ohm 1000s and really like them. Ohm also has a 120 home trial period with a full refund (though you'd be out shipping.)  The other speakers I use in a small room off my bedroom are Spendor 4/5s. These are Spendor's current incarna...
To Tube or not to Tube, that is the question
I've been quite pleased with my LSA VT-70 from Underwood HiFi, an online retailer. 35 watts/channel with EL34 output tubes (and it will also accept 6550 or KT88 outputs.) They are currently $1,300 plus shipping.
Should I upgrade my Advent 5002 speakers?
Second the motion on checking out Ohms. I have a pair of 1000s and they are great. Ohm also has a 120 home trial period, so you can return them if they don't pan out for you. You are just out shipping.
Compact ~20WPC Tube Amp
This is way under your budget, but I've been very pleased with the LSA VT-70 from Underwood HiFi. 35 watts/ch with EL34 output tubes (and you can also use 6550 or KT88 tubes in the amp.)  And, besides my good experience, it also has a number of ve...
How long did you have to wait for Primaluna to deliver
Current covid lockdowns may not be causing new problems, but there is still a lot of leftover mess hanging around -- the chip shortage, for example, is still playing catch-up.  $35 Raspberry Pi boards are still around $100 or more, for example. An...
Qobuz dropping rights to my favorites. A pox on their house.
I have the same search problems with my collection back when I had CDs and LPs -- the wife would listen to something and then put it back in a different spot....
How long did you have to wait for Primaluna to deliver
I bought a LSA VT-70 tube amp this summer and had to wait about two months for the next shipment to arrive in the US from the factory in China. Delays are still just part of life right now -- a single missing part means that the amp (or whatever) ...
Qobuz dropping rights to my favorites. A pox on their house.
@kletter1mann -- "I've been slowly culling my CD's, LP's and server library with the assumption that streaming service libraries would grow, not shrink." I can understand getting rid of CDs and LPs for reasons of the physical space they take up, ...
Did you ever buy too much bass?
The only complaint I ever have about "too much bass" involves the recording, not my system.  There are a few recordings out there where they got really carried away.
LSA VT-150
OK, but even the VT-150 has its limits at 60 watts/channel if you like 90 or 100+ dB listening volumes and end up with inefficient speakers or some that are current hogs.  I'm old-school, but believe in settling on speakers before deciding on an a...
Tube Preamp for Pass XA25 under $3,000
Something not mentioned yet in the responses -- you said "the more challenging funk and rock can get a bit muddled in the lower range." You are using Harbeth P3esr speakers -- the smallest bookshelves they make. The laws of physics place some lim...
LSA VT-150
I've had a LSA VT-70 for about 6 months now and really enjoy it. It has performed flawlessly with a pair of Spendor 4/5 bookshelf speakers which are only 84 dB sensitive. It has no problem playing them well past my desired average listening level ...
Why are so many people spending so much money to build “perfect” streaming system?
Even though I do a lot of streaming, it is NOT part of the argument that you have to give up any other format.  Like others have noted, I have many albums in my local collection that are not available on streaming and never will be -- for example,...
