Bigger amps in an enclosed cabinet?
You can use a simple computer fan run off a wall-wort type converter. I use two with trade name "Stealth" and they are quiet to the degree that I never even notice that they are on unless I look or unless I check the on/off switch. They run 24/7, ...
What's up with the 'Piano' gloss????
Seems the piano gloss would go best with a contemporary decor, but I can't picture it working as well with antique or craftsman style furnishings. Probably why most manufacturers offer options.
Has anyone heard the new PrimaLuna tube CD player?
Looks interesting. I didn't see an on/off or standby switch, so I wonder if it is on all the time or maybe goes to some sort of standby when you press stop. I also didn't see anything about the transport used, or the price.
it all sounds good, but.....
Although all the responses offer valid points, I would take this more in the direction of Avguygeorge, and suggest looking at the speaker/amp combo and dynamics. However, finding the right combo for a "realistic" presentation could be significantl...
what's 'Active preamp' vs 'Passive preamp'?
As with most things audio, there are many opinions regarding the sound quality provided by active and passive preamps, including the in-line attenuators discussed above. In general terms, a preamp accomplishes three things, a. switching between so...
A simple request---Please pack audio gear well.
Comments and tips,1."Overinsuring" is not necessarily insurance fraud. I just sold and shipped a preamp that now sells new for $5K. I did not sell it used for that, but I insured it for that. UPS treats items insured for $5K or more as higher valu...
Audio Aero Capitole - 6021W subminiature tube ??
Again, thanks for the responses. I own the Lector MkII and will soon have the MKIII board installed. I suspect it will retain the same sound with a bit more resolution. I have considered trying the Capitole primarily on the strength of all the pos...
Audio Aero Capitole - 6021W subminiature tube ??
Thanks everyone, you provided the information I needed. I chose not to contact Globe with this question, because if I purchase one of these, it will probably be used so I didn't want to waste their time.
Buying Someone's Records: An Ethics Question
Take an hour for a quick inspection of the records. If you still feel $5 each is fair, then buy them for that, or adjust your price (up or down) to a value you believe to be a reasonable win-win for both you and the electrician, and don't feel you...
Listening chair?
I wouldn't worry about HF absorption, since you can use room treatments, drapes, etc. for that purpose. I would focus on comfort. You should consider things like the length of your listening sessions since you may want more support and less cushio...
NOLA Speakers
I also had Alon V MkII's that had every possible upgrade, including the same Alnico bass drivers and tweeters as in the Circe, and finally outboard Circe crossovers with upgraded capacitors made by Alon/Nola. In the end, I just couldn't get them t...
Getting off the merry-go-round – AFRAID TO???
If you are satisfied with the sound of your two systems for the present, take a break and get off the upgrade path for the next 6 months. Spend the money and the time going to every live music concert you want to see, that is convenient for you to...
Trying to match impedance
The basic rule of thumb is to have input impedance of the amp be at least 10x the output impedance of the preamp. However, many consider this ratio too low and would be more comfortable with numbers of 20x or better. Also, preamp mfgs sometimes do...
How often to apply wax,to cabinet?
Laquer is my preferred finish for all woodworking projects. Wax can be applied for further protection, but I would only consider doing that on something like a coffee table or dining table. I use a wax on my quartersawn oak antique coffee table (a...
Best sounding CD Player for $3K or less used?
I assume you are talking about a redbook player, and not a universal player. If so, you might consider an Ayre CX-7e at around $2K. I also have been looking at different players in the $3K or so range that might significantly improve my system, bu...
