Reason for buying old/classic turntables
One thing I do not understand is the recent renewed attraction or romance with direct drive tables. What's wrong with a good belt drive that is well able to rotate the platter at a constant speed. Doesn't a belt design provide a more natural and c...
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
in the 60's, 70's and early 80's the largest consumer electronics companies in the world were spending their R&D money to perfect the tt technology.....particularly in Japan. especially in the area of direct drive systems. you see that Sony, P...
Neil Young Live at Massey Hall 200 g LP,
on a musical level this is as good as it gets (assuming you like Neil Young). also; these tunes were mostly yet to become the incons they became....so historically this was a very special concert.sonically this Lp is better than the very very good...
SP10 Mk II vs Mk III
the plan for the Steve Dobbins plinth for my Mk3 will be to remove the motor/platter from the Technics case. according to Steve; who has done a few of these Mk3's 'nude'; is that it further separates the Mk3 beyond the Mk2. since the Mk3 has quite...
An. Prod. reissues: 45RPMs vs 33RPM test pressing.
specifically regarding 33rpm test pressings; they are rarely much different from the regular pressings....i have maybe a dozen of them and the corresponding regular pressing. a couple are possibly a bit more vivid. in no case are they close to the...
SP10 Mk II vs Mk III
Jeffrey,it was difficult for me to find a Mk3. one i pursued ended up being a scam in S.E. Asia. i did find one in Japan but it was $8k and for some reason it could not be sold outside of Japan. then i got lucky; there was one listed inside an aud...
SP10 Mk II vs Mk III
hi Lew,the only person who has experience with this question at this time that i know of is Steve Dobbins who is the one who built the plinth for my Mk2 and is presently building the plinth for the Mk3. i shipped him my Mk3 a few weeks ago. it wil...
Hansen Emperor vs......
personally; i'm going with whatever Guido's ears are telling us.....whatever the brand.i've heard the upper end Hanson's a few times at shows over the last few years.....and i agree they are transparent to the source. a very refined and balanced s...
2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
Albert, that sounds exciting.....isn't it grand when something which seems to be soooo good.....becomes 'gooder' and 'for cheap'. i'm glad it's not some $2k power cord at least.hopefully Dobbins will let me know what i need to do to cash in on your...
2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
Raul,i think we are going a bit in circles here (and i'm part of that problem) as we are back to the whole 'proof of cause/effect of stylus drag' issue......when the issue is not likely one to be proved other than by listening.i wrote a long respo...
2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
Albert, thanks. and i'm excited to read about the technical merits of the Mk3 drive system. it's all your fault i've dived into these vintage dd tt's.i'll be shipping my Technics SP-10 Mk3 to Dobbins on Monday so he can work his magic with it. then...
2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
yet there is no drive system that will remove our drag problem that i am aware of.hummmmmm.as far as stylus drag/groove modulation.....i think that the Rockport Sirius III's drive system may solve this issue. you have an pure induction direct driv...
Choosing Between 2 Turntables
well....since i am presently enjoying my Steve Dobbins custom plinth'd 301 with Triplaner i suppose i'm a bit biased. even though i'm still getting to know it somewhat i can tell you that i just want to keep playing record after record whenever i ...
2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
Dear Mike : I'm not saying that the stylus drag is not audible certainly is what I'm saying is that I can't say ( only in a subjective way with out scientific measures ) that due to stylus drag a TT platter change its speed, that's all.Dear Raul; ...
2008 RMAF – – – all things analog.
i certainly agree with Teres that stylus drag is real and audible, it varies based on the complete tt system, it's noise floor and how flat the Lp is. i listen to an Lp on the top belt driven tt's and then on the Rockport and there is a difference...
