Eh hem!...Subwoofers... What do ya know?
@millercarbon - Thanks for the reply. I have had the same experience, that a well-integrated set of subs *seems* to image with the rest of the range. I hear the upright bass coming from in front of me, even though the two woofers are behind me.I'v...
Anthem STR or Lyngdorf TDAI 2170?
Regarding the Lyngdorf 3400, an audio friend who goes through a lot of gear had one. He has rotated through a TacT 2.2X, Tact 2.2XP, several DSPeaker units including the latest X4, and numerous equalizers. His speakers at present are, I think, the...
Replace LAT Coax cable between Bluesound and Oppo DAC
Don't buy anything unless you can audition it first. The effects of digital cables are very system-dependent. With excellent modern equipment, it's been my experience that the differences among SPDIF cables are slim to none. What connection is bett...
New Old Thiel CS6 Speakers--Too Harsh
Obviously, I’ve not been in your room, but let me suggest a few things.(1) with bare walls and ceiling, you have a lot of reflections. If there is slap echo anywhere, you need to kill it, preferably with a combination of diffusion and absorption. ...
Eh hem!...Subwoofers... What do ya know?
(1) One sub is not enough, for reasons given by @millercarbon. (2) Subs can be used to extend LF, but the most important use in many systems will be to fill nulls unavoidably caused by main speaker placement and room geometry. (3) It’s easier to g...
Inflated prices in audio
Why have prices gone up? Simple, there are fewer middle-class people buying and more ultra-rich. Manufacturers therefore aim at the latter.
Are you Beethoven or Mozart?
Haydn. More unpredictable than Mozart, less dramatic than Beethoven.
What are the best Room Accustic Treaments members have found?
As you add treatments, be careful not to add too much absorption without some diffusion as well. Combination products, such as the GIK Alpha series or RPG's BAD panels or any ASC product, will give a more pleasing acoustic result, in my experience...
Need new amp...
There's a used AVA Fet Valve 400R power amp right now on Audiogon; asking price $1500. This is a really nice amp, and because AVA products don't have as great resale value as some of the better-known brands, it's a bargain. There was a review of t...
Free, Higher Resolution Streaming Radio?
I second the recommendation of radiobit.50webs.com . Really interesting site!  And I'd point out that for casual listening an mp3 at 320 kbps will sound really good.
What are the best Room Accustic Treaments members have found?
GIK provides the lowest-cost treatments that are attractive and are developed and tested in accordance with known acoustic theory (unlike some of the gongs, pucks, tuning-fork like devices, etc.). They will send a treatment plan for a low fee, ref...
Anthem STR or Lyngdorf TDAI 2170?
@yyzsantabarbara : I also have a miniDSP SHD, and it is a tremendous unit. Since I have them in very different systems (STR Preamp in high-end system, SHD in TV system), I can’t compare sound quality directly. But here are a few things to look at:...
Bloom air around instruments
I've never heard audiophile "air" at the thousands of live acoustic (not amplified in any way) concerts. I think, in general, it's probably a pleasant artifact of recording and reproduction.
Unsolvable Woofer Pumping (Phono only)
Record warp is another possibility.
Anthem STR or Lyngdorf TDAI 2170?
@caphill : I agree about making the room as good as possible and doing without DSP if possible. Unfortunately, not every room can give good results without it. The space may be too lossy, not lossy enough,  too small, too poorly proportioned, and ...
