Can an “audiophile” ever be satisfied with a system?
I get to a point where the feeling is “how can it be any better?” and “good enough is good enough!”.Then I make an improvement like changing out a couple of tubes in the phono stage of my preamp for $25 NOS... the improvement is marked and signifi...
Can an “audiophile” ever be satisfied with a system?
The Forum has been a real eye opener to many issues around my system and hobby. I never thought a I would not miss my SET before I moved to Atma-Sphere. And now I have a global view on my LP content. For years, I winnowed down my large CD collectio...
Can an “audiophile” ever be satisfied with a system?
I answered my own question. It is distracting and misleading to listen to a lot of old, so so LPs.But when I put on those relatively few good recordings THEN I HEAR THE FULL POTENTIAL. And I do have quite a few of those. The ones I really like, I pl...
Can an “audiophile” ever be satisfied with a system?
The thrill of expecting something new is great. Not to mention receiving something “bright and shinny”.Chuck, you have gone to incredible lengths to tweak your system. Even inventing things!Wish I could bring myself to pay $199+ for Better-records...
In praise of the ESL-57
I lived happily with 57s for ten years. One day I decided to go for more bass and treble and more impact and sold them. I always used them without the screens and they were also quite ugly. I did blow up several amps and arced them but had them reb...
If you could buy any system, regardless of price, what would it be?
Probably the closest to the truth is that us audiophiles would never be satisfied with any system... or would we?Think that is another thread!
My thoughts on TT isolation methods.
I am currently waiting for the construction of my Silent Running Audio (SRA) VR platform for my Woodsong Garrard 301. The TT sits atop a decent Polycrystal rack. Recommended as vital to his system by Ralph Karsten. Now suffering from footfalls. Ho...
What's the best and/or favorite piece of equipment you've owned? And do you still own it?
Woodsong Garrard 301 wt Triplaner arm and Miyajima Shalabi cartridge. The beauty of it and the function always thrill me. Not to mention its drive and impact. Never had another TT that recreated music with such reality. And I just love to look at ...
High end stereo preamps? Worth it?
I used passive preamps for many years. Then one day I decided to check out an active. I decided on an Audible Illusions. I was stunned and amazed! The music had structure and substance I never heard.I now have upgraded to an Atma-Sphere MP-3. Pric...
Have speakers really improved within the last 20 years??
Measurements are relatively meaningless compared to the sound.IME, there are only a handful of speakers that sound “real”.I believe the biggest factor is the matching of drivers and crossovers. The designer’s knowledge of what music sounds like is...
Are there any tube amps that don't give off any---
+1 LTA Berning designed OTL.I have the MicroZOTL headphone amp.SS detail with tube musicality and not hot.
Advice on CD transport
HiI feel the best built and best sounding under $1000 transport is the Theta Compli. Built like a battleship and super solid. You might be able to find one for around $500. Think the original price was over $2K. In 1990s dollars. Any used Oppo is ...
Most desirable vacuum tubes for SET amps
Many swear by NOS 300B Western Electrics. But they have become rare and upwards of $5000+ a pair. My favorite are 45s in general the lower the power the more magic. But at 1 1/2 watts you need super sensitive speakers.
Question/Advice About Isolation Feet for Speakers
Stillpoints Ultra Minis. I put them under my speakers and the appeared to double the value and impact. They are $750 for 6.they use ceramic bearings instead of rubber in the Gaias. I believe speakers need solid connections to the floor. You may be ...
