External DAC For Oppo 105 At What Cost?
I had the same issue with my 105. Strongly suggest you NOT modify it, but find the right DAC. It is not hard to outperform the DAC in the 105. I use an LKS that beats the 105 by a mile, but it’s not for everyone. If you decide to sell a modded 105...
CD"S
As you might suppose I am in agreement generally with audiotroy.  Except that you don't have to spend big bucks to rip the disks.  I rip disks (with metadata) easily and maintain my library using JRiver.  Also, I have discovered that a laptop can ...

We're going a bit far afield.  The OP asked for advice between going to a new CD disk player, perhaps the Yamaha, or to hard disk.

@ sd40 "One thing to note, however, is that the condition of used CD's for sale can only go downhill over time. Eventually the supply of good-quality used CD's will play out."I have copied used CDs from various sources, some looking unbelievabl...
are "LONDON" pressings made in the UK, inferior to the Decca pressings
Arthur Salvatore has been mentioned.  Anyone with enough interest to have read this far should look here for more than you may have wanted to know about this subject: http://www.high-endaudio.com/softw.html#Decca

"I know this question is a little hard to answer."No, it's very easy.  There's nothing about a silver disk that adds to the SQ of the files on it,  In fact, playing the disk detracts from SQ.  Rip the CDs and the SACDs.  There are programs that do...
Simaudio 390 Network Streamer | DAC | Preamp
Can't comment on performance though I have and treasure Sim Moon amp and preamp.  But getting an all-in-one component locks you out of future developments in the digital world that is very fast moving.  I would always consider separate DAC, stream...

Need to adjust the speed every time I turn on turntable
A long time ago when I began to notice speed fluctuations on my VPI TT I cured it with a clean-out and lubrication of the bearing and a lubrication of the motor.  So that might be an issue,But phoenixengr, who apparently now licenses his invention...
Playing SACDs
" Ripping the DSD portion of SACDs seems complicated" It is not!Once set up you simply put each disk into the player, one after another, click on a program once, and they download to your computer. Thousands of audiophiles have done it. The design...
SACD or not SACD?
To which I wold add that if you have not heard your SACDs as rips (and your CDs too) you probably haven't heard them at their best.  Running a silver disk through a machine can do nothing to improve the SQ of the music files they contain.  Only de...
Playing SACDs
@smdb01us Bravo!  Now it's a no-brainer.  You will be very happy with the results.  You might begin by having a look here: https://www.stereophile.com/content/music-round-93-minidsp-ripping-sacds-page-2Let the folks here know how it worked out.
Playing SACDs
I suggest you rip your SACDs. Makes them easy and convenient to play, and with the highest possible SQ. You haven’t said which Oppo you have, but if you have either the 105 or 103, you’re all set to do it. If you don’t have one of those, you might...
SoundSmith Counter Intuitive for VPI tone arms
Yes the CI works very well.  No friction problem here.  Perhaps there was a user who didn't like the normally tight fit.Even useful, though perhaps not as essential, f you get the dual pivot which I also recommend.
Shelter 501 mkii then what now
I had a 501 re-tipped at SoundSmith with the OCR.  It was fine.  But it was easy to tell that an Audio Technica Art-9 outperformed it.  The re-tipped 501 was easy to sell.
