Denon 103r ????
"goose bumps"I'll vouch that the 103R is quite capable of that on a regular basis.
Upgrade advice, please.
"I discovered some years back that some of the distortion that I thought was on my recordings, was actually my 60 watt KT88 tube monoblocks overloading. Recordings with few dynamics sounded fine, but the stinkers were actually the ones that were t...
Tandberg TR-2080 FM STEREO lights up ?
Not uncommon for that bulb on the tr-2080 to be quirky. Mine was mostly out for years but on occasion (usually after a cleaning) would decide to come on briefly and then go out again. I think it has to do with deposits on a contact somewhere inter...
Are there any albums you consider perfect?
"Is it me, or does the mix on this recording get substantially better three or four songs into it?"Not sure. I'll give it a listen again when I have a chance and see. A couple things about Steve Hackett recordings I have found.- He is one artist I...
To Preamp Or Not To Preamp,That Is The Question
There is no right. In your case, a pre-amp is not needed since the volume can be adjusted at the source. If you want to go for a different sound, there are many ways to go. You could run a music server and play via a network music player, like Squee...
Upgrade advice, please.
You could go either way, a good high power high current SS amp to optimally drive the Totems (maybe Class D/Icepower) or change to speakers that are more tube friendly. If you like tubes, then changing speakers would seem to be the way to go but f...

Speakers for Rock Music
I found B&W P6s very good for rock when I owned them. They shook the rafters perhaps better than any other speaker I have owned. Could probably be had for not much used these days if you can find them.
Review: Merlin Music Systems TSM-mmi Monitor
With a design tweaked over a long period of time, there is a better chance that it accomplishes its sonic goals well. A listener will either share the same goals or not. That will largely help determine whether the product is for you or not.
My ears of tin are over 50
Rgs,I am similar. Its almost as if losing ability to hear the higher frequencies one can when younger facilitates an improved focus on what you can still hear.I consider myself fortunate that my ability to appreciate good sounding music has perhap...
What is wrong with negative feedback?
"Mapman - I also observed that listening at low volumes with Icepower is very good. I know that part of the problem is our hearing but I enjoy very good and clean sound (with very articulate bass) at low levels without any loudness correction. I c...
What is wrong with negative feedback?
When I first heard the IcePower amps in my setup, the difference in the nature of teh sound from anything I had heard prior was most startling. It was most apparent in that major volume adjustments seemed to have comparably little effect on volume...
Why not horns?
How about an example of a recording I might be familiar with where the players (singer, whatever) is/are properly sized for reference?
Why not horns?
"Some of the very best loudspeakers I've ever heard and some of the worst –where horns"I fall into that category as well."Does any other horn owner have a problem with larger than realistic presentation?"What does "larger than realistic" mean? Som...
Why not horns?
Unsound, I thought I remember you saying something along the line that you would never have horns in your house or something to that effect. I could be wrong.Assuming so, I'd say the deck does not count as IN your house, but once they get that clo...
