Why do old tubes sound better than current tubes?
Nostalgia?
Bands that had a "masterpiece", w/ common theme
Not an entire album but also "Suppers Ready" by Genesis. My admiration of this composition only increases each time I hear it.
Trade- off, power SS vs tube magic.
If you do not account for the speaker used, then I am comfortable describing any good results obtained as "magic" or perhaps more accurately "luck".
What music do you want to play really loud?

Is the color in the amp , the preamp, the souce?
no two devices operate or sound the same because well they are designed and built differently. almarg hits upon many of the technical reasons nicely.how to sort through it all and decide what will work best though?my advice is always to do your ho...
Albert Porters after market panzerholz plinths
I'm still not getting it.I believe a table spinning at a constant speed has 0 acceleration. Acceleration occurs as the table gets up to speed and prior to playing. So I'm not sure I understand how the higher mass plinth can enter into this. If teh...
What makes strings sound "sweet"?
"This is absolutely the hardest element for a stereo to convey. ... The recording is important, but so is your stereo."Agree 100%. Subtle weaknesses in source, pre-amp, ICs, and/or power amp together will often exhibit themselves here during a wel...

One more thing I can note from my experience with DD and belt tables years ago is that overall DD tables did indicate better speed control overall than belts. Belt drives tended to have greater variability in speed accuracy from unit to unit as in...
How many 'listen outside of the box' design?
I have nothing against boxes or enclosures if done well, though I have always tended to lean away from them. The OHM Walsh's in my setup are somewhat unique in how the downward firing driver is mounted in relation to the box, which comes into play...
Albert Porters after market panzerholz plinths
I used to sell many belt, idler and direct drive tables back in their heyday and heard many. I could never attribute a clear sonic difference to drive type. Tonearms, carts, and other things but never drives. Nobody told me any type was superior. ...

"So a heretofore unknown fault inherent to a belt drive turntable became apparent. "How can you know the drive mechanism is the reason? Aren't the two tables best optimized with different tonearm, and cartridge plus also set up and calibrated diff...

I still do not get the whole fascination with DD turntables in general, but I can see how a heavy plinth could benefit by providing better isolation from motor noise which I suspect would be more inherent to start with in general with DD tables.To...
Ohm Walsh Micro Talls: who's actually heard 'em?
Its true that omni speakers produce a distinctly different class of sound that can wow people immediately regardless because the presentation is so inherently unique. Most may never bother or feel need to move forward from their initial setup at t...
Why Don't More People Love Audio?
An increasingly small % of people have all the pre-requisites to love audio (as opposed to just loving music). The pre-requisite that is the most increasingly restrictive is perhaps the desire to spend a lot of time just listening to music. Time is...
What makes strings sound "sweet"?
Agree also that distortion of any kind including IM will surely wreck havoc with the sound of strings especially. Getting strings to sound good along with everything else is one of the most elusive things to accomplish with a system I have found.
