Magnepan 3.7
Exactly,The only difference between QR and 'regular' maggie driver is foil vs wire.
How loud is loud, What DB is actually loud?
Jet noise? I was at Rose Parade when the B-2 just idled over. You could hear it for another 30 seconds after it was gone. Close up, that thing's gotta be LOUD.I also was at a landing and takeoff of a Concord. That was maybe the loudest thing I've ...
Magnum Dynalab 308 drive Magnepan 1.7 or 3.6?
Another couple considerations for Ctunney::Except for the 20.1 which is push / pull, Maggies are not the same front and back. I personally prefer 'backwards' and listen to the pole piece side NOT the mylar side. Magnepan made the switch some years...
Magnepan 3.7
Do Ribbons use 'foil'? I would expect the driver portion to be thicker than foil. Maybe .050" or so. No? Isn't the driver portion of a ribbon under some tension? (pull)The difference between QR and 'regular' panels is that the QR uses foil. The we...
Magnepan 3.7
People also replace the 3M glue with Gorilla glue. Sticks like crazy and delam problems are history. Check out the (Extensvie) DIY crowd over at Audio Asylum....the Planar Asylum, at that. Many discussions have been had about the cost/ benefit of ...
Amplifiers and Damping Factor
speaker / amp matching is key. Proper speakers for tubes will have good bass as will proper speakers for SS.Speaker 'Q' is not talked about much but also plays into the equation. A speaker of 'Q'>1.2 or so will be sloppy no matter how high the ...
Why no heated gear?
I saw an 'instant on' modification for a (tube) table radio.I don't remember the exact mod except it was very simple. Ran the heaters at a very low level and lowered turnon / stable time quite a bit.don't do it.
Naim and Magnepan
1.6s while not a pure resistive load, do not have wacky reactance peaks and are therefore not a 'bad' load. Try the Naim? If you do, please post back. If not pushed, it should work fine.....and don't try to fill a huge space with sound, either.
Amp damping factor?
One point NOT addressed so far is that of phase angle. When voltage leads or lags current, power to the speaker is compromised.Tube amps do not like capacitive loads, either. Sensitivity, while important, may in some cases be trumped by a phase.A h...
Integrated amplifier recommendations, Please
Good, listen to complete systems. That's the best (better) way. Others have said that simply choosing an amp without knowing at least something about proposed speakers is not a good idea are 100%. I wouldn't recommend B&W with the Marantz, ho...
Amp damping factor?
Bi,Read the rest of this thread. Most of your questions answered.
Class D amps, bang for your buck ones
I've heard it and repeated it.....that the 'd' amps using the B&O modules have more in common than differences (sound-wise), but is that TRUE? Has anyone simply lined a bunch of 'em up and gave a reasonable listen? The case and front panel...no...
Class D amps, bang for your buck ones
Yes, Tim, I believe you are right. the GainCell is proprietary. As a result, methinks, the input impedance of the PSAudio gear differs from that advertised for the ASP modules. I'll check out the review, but am reluctant to crack a case at this ti...
Class D amps, bang for your buck ones
Has anyone but me noticed that the W4S looks nearly identical to the PSAudio GCC series? I just looked at a backpanel photo from W4S and the differences are tough to spot. Do (did) these amps come off the same line? Same sub? Did the PSAudio guys ...
Opening the top of a Hafler p-1500 amp. Please
If it was put together it should be capable of being taken apart.Find a 13 year old! just kidding......That would be if you had a computer problem. Some kind of spring clip? I'll look the amp up and checkout whatever photos are available.Check out ...
