Top 5 favorite MM cartridges currently available
I really don't have any first-hand experience, but the Garrott Brothers business is alive and well in Australia, and they make an interesting range of MM or MI cartridges that are also worth consideration. And I am shocked, shocked I tell you, tha...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Henry, Your retorts are ridiculous, but I love you for your persistence. Once you get a bad idea, you hold onto it for dear life. Since we are each separated from one another by thousands of miles, it is not practical to devise a real world experi...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
How can I prove to your satisfaction that the tracing of a record groove by a stylus attached to a cantilever would impart energy into the cantilever and hence into structures to which the cantilever is attached, ultimately to the cartridge body? ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dear Halcro, As regards your little discussion with Fleib re vibrational energy emanating from a phono cartridge, I would like to add my voice to that of Fleib. IMO, you are incorrect if you think that such a phenomenon does not occur. And yes, it...
Turntable speed accuracy
Dear Dover, I don't. But I am surprised you were even able to perceive (visually) a 2-mm displacement, although I guess over time you could measure a larger distance and then extrapolate backwards to determine 2mm per revolution.
Turntable speed accuracy
"2 mm on the wall" is meaningless, unless you tell us the distance from spindle to wall surface, but in any case it sounds like the effect of stylus drag is very tiny, probably not audible and probably not worth worrying about. Unless I misremembe...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I agree totally with Raul, which is why these discussions of resonance or "distortions" are so difficult, why each of us needs to listen carefully to the others, and also why expressing ones self as clearly as possible is a good idea.
Azimuth observations and importance
Dear Bifwynne: You wrote, "What I don't know is whether the cartridge is operating at optimal channel balance".... I am guessing that this was just an unfortunate choice of words. Azimuth has very little effect on "channel balance", as that term g...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Nandric, My Reed has the optional azimuth adjustable headshell. My inspection of it suggests to me that it is firmly imbedded into the wood arm wand, not just one fastener. Thus the mechanical interface between it and the wood seems to be a bit be...
Glanz moving magnet cartridges
Good one!
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dover, Why not just add a weight, if that was your only objection to the TP? One can easily increase the effective mass of any tonearm, not easy to go in the other direction. I agree with you that "medium mass" tonearms are neither here nor there ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Fleib, I respect your opinion regarding headshells. However, have you ever taken a good look at the construction of some of the modern very highly regarded tonearms that do not allow for interchangeable headshells? Many of them, especially the woo...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Acman, This is by nature second-hand information, but nowhere have I ever read that F8 and F9 are similar, with respect to performance. Can you quote your source on that? If I owned both, I would listen to each and make my decision based on my own...
Technics SP-10 mkII speed adjustment question
Sebastien, Glad you are pleased. I am quite sure that the CU180 would be a big upgrade vs the OEM rubber mat. (Almost any not-rubber mat would be, I think.) Albert will speak for himself if he disagrees, but I do think he now uses the Boston Audio...
Glanz moving magnet cartridges
Raul,I have no dog in this fight, but I would point out two things in response to your long post:(1) In part, It is certainly possible that integrated designs went away back in the 80s mostly because phono itself was on the wane and the latest and...
