Nude Turntable Project
Hi Henry, Did you consider slate, or is it difficult to source slate in Oz? I suppose bronze is even denser than slate, but I think slate competes with granite, for density. This is not to say that I have any way of knowing whether slate is better...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I've been using an Acutex LPM320STRIII (heretofore to be known only as "LPM320") for quite some time now on my Lenco with Dynavector DV505 tonearm. The Acutex alternates with a still original Grace Ruby. At first, the Grace had the edge, but latel...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Thanks, Halcro and Banquo. To answer Halcro, the symptom is as follows and as I described it before, except now that it is constant, I can make more complete observations: The tt starts up fine. The tach will show it ramp up to the 33.33 display, ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Forgot to ask: I have reached the end of my rope with the TT101. In my efforts to fix it, I have achieved one thing; the fault is now constant, not intermittent. The good news is that this may make it easier for a really good tech to diagnose the ...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Possible "scoop" on the new Technics: From the drawings, it appears to have a coreless motor, a la my lovely L07D and the cantankerous TT101. That would be great. Furthermore, the magnets appear to be attached to the underside of the platter at it...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Could be wrong, but I did not think eff mass of FR64S was quite THAT high (35gm). I assumed it was in the 20-30gm range. Some of those data on VE are suspect, at best. Of course, one variable is the choice of headshell. I think the FR headshells c...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Dover (and possibly others), is the MFG61 unusual in that it has a low compliance? Otherwise I have to wonder whether your impressions of its sound are "colored" by the fact that it is mismatched with the FR64S. I know Raul convinced many that the...
Stand out phono stages
Kiko, Is it correct that the Pro-ject max input resistance is 1200 ohms? Yet in other respects it seems suitable for MM cartridges, as well as MC. Why does it not offer 47K ohms or the like?
Is it time for a phono stage?
If you're keeping the Mac, then you don't need a full function preamplifier (like the Aesthetix Janus), so that's a beginning. Of the phono only units mentioned, I'd vote for K&K (which can be purchased pre-assembled for not much extra), Herro...
Love / Hate relationship with vinyl?
Tubes per se don't hum (in the electrical sense of the word, which refers to 60Hz noise created by a ground problem); they just fade away like old soldiers. However, tubes can be microphonic, wherein they will pick up any environmental vibrations ...
List of Audio Tube Measured Noise Performance
Scott, Re the ECC99, If one uses it as a driver, i.e., a cathode follower, would the noise be so important? Thanks for taking the trouble to both purchase and measure several of them. I am using them in my very hi-gain phono stage as gain tubes; n...
Wanted: Luxman Tuner in Wood Cabinet
I've got a T110. I am the original owner for these many years.
To isolate or not to isolate, that is the question
Glass shelves are generally not a good idea. You might look at stands made by reputable audio companies, like Adona and others I cannot recall, at least for an idea about proper shelves. You want the stand to be as solid as possible. If your marble...
Koetsu cartridges - what arms work?
Very nice TT, that Hanss.
MM cartridges
In order to rest my Grace Ruby, I have been doing a lot of listening lately to my Acutex LPM320STRIII, the long nose version (on a Dynavector DV505 with DV headshell). It gets better and better with frequent use, and I daresay that at this point I...
