Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
I guess I am guilty of being a frequent advocate of replacing electrolytics in vintage DD turntables, meaning electrolytics that are typically at least 30 years old. My main reasons for that are (1) it's cheap insurance against a future failure, a...

Perhaps you are  like me; as I have aged, I am less and less inclined to DIY or Do-It-MYself, except when it comes to the actual electronics.  I still enjoy messing about in a tube circuit. I look at the 3 slate plinths I had made for Lenco, Denon...

Richard, What interests me most is WHY did you decide to make an entirely new platter for the Mk3?  And what are the consequences to how it works associated with incorporating one half of a speed sensor device into the platter?  (What's a "toothed...
Questionable service at Soundsmith
Rather than to conclude that they did a one-hour rush job on your cartridge after you finally got through to them with your complaint, I am more inclined to believe that your cartridge may have been rebuilt months ago and then stuck on a shelf som...
OK...I've ditched my mono cartridge
I have done quite a bit of research and thinking on this subject.  Before you can dismiss mono cartridges as a class, I think you have to consider how the particular mono cartridge(s) you are evaluating was constructed. Only a few were constructed...
Best Equipment Stand
Possibly the springy Gyrodeck suspension and your self-described springy floor are not made for each other.  In addition, no disrespect to the Mitchell, but your system is worthy of a turntable upgrade. You might consider the purchase of an unsusp...

I think Halcro once posted photos of the circuit boards in his Halcro preamplifier.  Either he or someone else did. The parts and the entire upper surface of the PCB were shown to be coated with some plasticene material, in sort of an off brown/gr...

The question remains, what is "encapsulating" the lead platter of the Proscenium?  Possibly Walker now plays down the lead platter for fear of either having violated some environmental regulation or for fear of being singled out on that same basis...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Yes, So far as I know as told to me by Lloyd Walker himself, the platter of the Proscenium is one giant slab of lead.
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
On the safety of a lead platter.  The Walker Audio tt uses a solid lead platter.  They coat it with something that both imparts a nice black shiny smooth finish and probably makes it safe to handle. One might inquire with Walker Audio how they do ...
What cart. for the Reed 3P?
Please stop with the bit about distortion on tube electronics.  It would be inappropriate to reply here, but suffice to say that what you say applies to transformer coupled tube amplifiers, not to any other form of tube gear.  Well done tube pream...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
JB, I have a feeling that the results with the Mk2 might be more profoundly positive than even what I am hearing from the Mk3, if only because I think I could hear a low level gray-ish coloration with the Mk2 that is likely to have been fixed by K...
What cart. for the Reed 3P?
Raul, (1) I have removed the brush entirely from my 980LZS. This probably reduces its weight by 2-3 gm. (It would be interesting to know the exact weight of the brush assembly.) And (2) with age, it is quite likely that the actual compliance of th...
Need New MM Cartridge Recommendation
JB, Wait a week and play a lot of music before you post a review. Else you are likely to be taken by the different-ness of a new cartridge as much as by its intrinsic good or bad qualities. I also tend to trust Raul. If he says your Roksan is a "k...

I shouldn't have written that "no one really knows" the nature of the Krebs mod.  Obviously, Richard and Bill do know.  But they ain't talkin'.My experience agrees with what Richard wrote about "run in".  As I wrote earlier, the differences were a...
