Newb question regarding alignment - Should the stylus Physically touch the protractor?
"Too easy to bend a stylus."  Which is only one good reason to tape the platter so it does not move.  Are you saying that the tonearm is constrained from moving, if the platter is immobilized in such a fashion?  If the unit is in "play" mode, this...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
I just looked at the exploded view parts diagram on p. 28 of the Service Manual.  That black cover is not shown as a separate part; it's shown as part of the motor assembly, which is held in place by the 3 screws, parts #69 in the diagram.  That t...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Thanks, Peter.  I have two questions: (1) Why would this condition have suddenly occurred.  Neither I nor anyone else has done anything to that slot-head screw that resides in the bottom of the bearing well, and (2) can you amplify on what part yo...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
Problem with TT101 motor noise.  Dear brothers of the TT101, My unit was out of use for a few weeks, because our basement was flooded in a minor way during the last torrential rain in DC, and before that I was away at a meeting.  Yesterday, I fire...
New Reel to Reel machines!
To add to what Raul says, why settle for tapes made from an LP, if the rationale for going to the expense of purchasing an R2R machine is based on sonics?  If I were to go that route, I would want only first or second generation master tapes. Or I...
Klyne vs 47 Labs phono stage
Dear J, Yes, as mentioned, I did talk to Stan Klyne 2-3 times, regarding both the outboard PS that I built myself for my unit and the state of tune I eventually chose for the phono section in my 6LX, which he rebuilt.  I agree he is a very nice pe...
Newb question regarding alignment - Should the stylus Physically touch the protractor?
You would lose accuracy if the tip of the stylus is not allowed to touch the surface of the protractor.  Adding a layer of plastic over a paper protractor might have a similar, although negligible, effect on accuracy. However if stylus force (VTF)...
Drying time after a VPI record cleaner?
Perhaps my HW17 has a slightly stronger vacuum sucker than does the 16.5, but I find that my LPs are very nearly bone dry after vacuum.  I usually just wave them around in the air for a minute or two before re-packaging them, always using a new en...
Klyne vs 47 Labs phono stage
We're even.  You wish you had not had to sell your Klyne, and I wish I had been willing to allow Stan Klyne to max out mine.  The Allnic also interests me. Without trying to compare it to your Klyne, how do you like the Allnic, perhaps compared to...
Klyne vs 47 Labs phono stage
Dear JMcgrogan,  So I am wondering why you sold your Klyne?  I find my 6LX to be great as a line stage and maybe not as good as my best sounding tube phono stages, but maybe only because I cut corners on having Stan Klyne upgrade my phono.  As I s...
Tonearm mount on the plinth or on Pillar ?
Sorry, Ct.  I just took another look at that photo, and I still think that the new brushed aluminum or steel pillar that holds the tonearm closest to the viewer is NOT sitting on the shelf; to my eyes it is attached to the granite base that also s...
Tonearm mount on the plinth or on Pillar ?
Ct, I if I misinterpreted the photo of the Verdier, mea culpa.  But would it be possible to have this discussion without the heavy air of sarcasm and condescension?  Most of us are trained professionals in some specialized area or other.  And most...
Tonearm mount on the plinth or on Pillar ?
Verdier photo:  It looks to me like Dietrich simply replaced the OEM flimsy tonearm mount (an inverted L-shaped affair that never looked to be very stable, to me) with a nice solid pillar and then attached it directly to the granite "plinth".  Not...
Full Manual Turntable-What to do
One of the beauties of direct-drive or idler-drive is that the platter gets up to speed much more quickly than does that of a belt-drive turntable. In that case, the choice for me is clearer; I shut the motor down not only between LPs but also whe...
Tonearm mount on the plinth or on Pillar ?
Flieb, Exactly what part of what I wrote, specifically, is BS?  Would you use an outboard arm pod with a suspended turntable? I don't think so. You are arguing specifics (it might not work well because of this or that), and I am talking about the ...
