Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
Just to be clear-er, the Brilliance control is an "inexpensive" L-pad that in my opinion and that of many others colors the sound quite audibly.  Removing or bypassing it has absolutely no effect on the crossover point.  If one were to find that t...
Soundsmith Aida vs Hana sh
Pipetowers, I think I understand your question; you want to choose between HL and Aida.  I offered the perhaps irrelevant opinion that the Hana SL may be superior to both, based on written opinions I have seen on line (not based on personal experi...
Technics SP10 MK3 bearing and lubrication
Shane, I bought JP's chip a year or more ago, but I need to have him install it.  (My OEM IC was and still is working fine.) That would be you, JP.  Back then, you said you were making some further improvements to the circuit.  Could you deal with...
Soundsmith Aida vs Hana sh
The scuttlebutt that I read was to the effect that the Hana SL is the one to get.  Of course, it's output is lower than that of the HL and of the Aida.  So maybe not compatible with your system as is.

Gary, That's a pretty accurate summary.  The notion to remove or bypass the brilliance control is actually older than the ideas to modify the backplate that came from Will and me.  I remain puzzled that Sound Lab would upgrade to a larger toroid w...
Technics SP10 MK3 bearing and lubrication
Thanks, guys.I had totally forgotten about this long lost thread, which must have gone unnoticed by everyone else until now.My Mk3 was NOS when I bought it; it's still in perfect cosmetic condition. I have done the Krebs mod, and I mounted the cha...

Ralph, Are you referring to the resistor "R" in the RC network?  I totally agree that R is a big problem in the original design, but if you remove it entirely, that would make a dramatic change in the crossover point.  For the example given above ...
aluminum platter vs Acrylic not what I thought
Dear Melm,  If you say so, it must be "nonsense".  I am not a lawyer, was just offering that out as a possibility.
Why does unplugging/replugging TT leads from tube phono pre-amp reset dead channel?
Or by the way, have you ever unscrewed the protective barrels of the male RCAs at the ends of the ICs, to see whether there is an intermittent or cold solder joint to the hot pin?
Why does unplugging/replugging TT leads from tube phono pre-amp reset dead channel?
You really don't need to upgrade the cable so much as you need to try a different pair of male RCA plugs at the ends of the cables coming from your Linn. If you have soldering skills, you can buy any pair of aftermarket male RCAs and do it yoursel...

Dear tzh, Did we (the peanut gallery) ever find out whether your various comparisons were made with all other elements of the signal path held constant, or not?  Dear Thom, My apologies for my error in guessing at the materials used to make your G...
aluminum platter vs Acrylic not what I thought
Yes, but the OP inserts a platter mat between the LP and the platter.  Platter mats make a big difference, like adding salt and pepper to your food, regardless of the nature of the platter.  Moreover, nearly all turntables have platters made of so...

Thanks, Noromance.  I had no idea the cost would be so high.  In the photo (from 2015) they show a single pair of Quads. This year (and I think last year) EMIA ran a double pair of Quads. Believe me, with Dave's mods, there is no lack of bass resp...

Same tonearm? Same cartridge? Same downstream amplification? Same speakers? Same LPs? Same etc? Also, you say you used "various platter mats".  In my experience, the platter mat makes a more dramatic difference in sonics than does the material of w...
Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
Yep. Quad 57s, KLH 9s, early Acoustats, Janszen tweeters.  They were all made with tube amplifiers in mind. For a real treat you might look into the Quad mods made by Dave Slagle, for driving them with tubes. Fantastic results.Gary, Most of what I...
