Best vintage DD turntables from the 70's and 80's?
I'm happy to see someone here recognized the excellence of the Denon DP80 as against the Technics backbone of this thread.  Enjoy!  I think it's a Best Buy, if you can find a nice one.I agree with Downunder on the relationship between the Pioneer ...
MoFi Ultradeck or Technics 1200GR
Soundwatts, With all due respect, your level of experience with DD turntables (old production SL1200 and 1100 and a listen under unknown conditions to a new SL1200GR) does not warrant your gross generalization regarding "huge soundstage".  In my l...
FR64 cartridge suggestions
These days, any of the "best" FR cartridges that aren’t broken will cost at least $1500-$2000, based on current eBay "buy it now" advertisements. At that price point, there is some pretty serious competition. As I have never heard any of the FRs, ...
SAT 30K+$$ TONEARM: W O R T H T O H A V E I T ?
I have never owned or listened to an SME 3012R tonearm except perhaps briefly in other peoples systems, but I find it hard to believe that between the SAT and the 3012R there are no other competitor s that might be superior to the SME.  From this...

fleschler, Do you really mean to say that you (formerly) could hear frequencies up to nearly 30kHz?  That's one way to interpret your term "high 20kHz".  If so, maybe we should be calling you Fido.  Seriously, as a doctor I can say that to be only...

Keep in mind that one reason the FR tonearms have such a high effective mass is because their headshells are quite heavy, as headshells go. Therefore you can reduce the effective mass of the tonearm by using a much lighter weight headshell. For e...
Difference in sound using different carts when digitizing vinyl record?
Dear Solypsa, I'm with you.
Best vintage DD turntables from the 70's and 80's?
edgeware made a good point, and so did Chakster:  The PL70 has an edge on its competition at its price point, by virtue of its included tonearm, which seems to be the same as the one on the P3.  I've seen that tonearm for sale separately at prices...
Phono stage w/automatic Load-Impedanance.
I want to make sure we are talking about the same thing.  Cartridges have a fixed DC resistance (DCR) if you measure the resistance between hot and ground connectors for each channel using a simple ohmmeter.  Cartridges also have an output impedan...
VPI prime scout VS Music Hall 9.3 VS Technics SL-1200GR VS Rega Planar 6
Your own adjectives suggest, but don't prove, that you might prefer the "direct-drive" sound.  There's only on DD turntable on your list.  Since it is unlikely you would be able to audition all 4 of those on your list prior to purchase, I suggest ...
Phono stage w/automatic Load-Impedanance.
So the Phonata is not, in fact, a current-driven phono in the way that the Aqvox and BMC MMCI and several others are. Somewhere I thought you said it was.

Phono stage w/automatic Load-Impedanance.
There is another thread of much more recent origin around current-driven phono stages. But in any case, by definition, a current-driven phono stage with so-called automatic impedance loading would not require an SUT. As I think I wrote elsewhere, ...
Phono stage w/automatic Load-Impedanance.
Dear Chakster, maybe I should read more of this thread before writing this, but I am confused. If the phonata is a current type design, why would you even be using any SUT? An LOMC cartridge with low internal resistance should plug right into the ...
