Cartridge Loading.....Part II
I haven't kept track of which current driven phono stages on the market use op amps or discrete transistors or tubes in the input I/V stage, although I don't know of any that use a tube or how you could use a tube in that fashion.  However, I woul...
Cartridge Loading.....Part II
Ralph, you wrote, "The '0 Ohms' value you see in so many phono sections that have transimpedance inputs probably isn't helping people to understand what is going on. That value is probably the marketing department talking since they probably didn'...
Cartridge Loading.....Part II
Ralph, two questions: (1) what if the input device is a discrete transistor or a tube, not an op amp?  (2) the only way I can imagine two points separated by 5 ohms but at the same potential is if and when there is no current flowing. How does th...
Need some Cart recommendations, $300 - $700 (New/Used) range…warm, full, yet great def.
Or new Nagaoka, audio Technica, SoundSmith SMMC, Garrot, etc.

For your budget and stated desires, you want an MM or MI cartridge.  Not a cheap MC. For only one example, a Grace F9 or Ruby retipped by SoundSmith with their LC or OCL stylus.
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
Clearthinker, that’s an impressive list of cartridges. Your colibri with 36 ohm internal resistance probably has a healthy voltage output. Do you run it into the Grail in current mode or voltage mode or does the Grail even offer that choice via se...
Pigskin or jico leather mat
Soko, Your mat represents the "other" school of thought around mats, the idea that you want to hold the LP away from the platter and from any noise or vibrations that might enter into it from the platter.  The Resomat, sold by Vic of Trans-Fi, I t...
Cartridge Loading.....Part II
On the subject of phono input impedance as it relates to the discussion between Atma-sphere and Intact Audio, one should also keep in mind that every "current drive" phono stage seems to be a bit different from every other "current drive" phono st...
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
Here is the vdH website on their phono stages: https://www.vandenhul.com/product-category/electronics/ The way I read it, the SB offers balanced operation; the base model may only offer XLR inputs into an SE circuit. I don't know. The language i...
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
I don’t understand. If you order the Channel D with digital RIAA, then you have to supply your own outboard AD/DA converter? Or does the Seta output a digital signal that the user has to convert back to analog, or what?
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
Boothroyd, I found this in the Sussuro cartridge owners manual: "Please also note that some designs of “current amplifier” preamp circuits will not allow loading in the range required, causing the Sussurro MK II ES to sound very dull – caused by...
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
Hi Ralph, You wrote, "This suggests that as the impedance of the cartridge goes up, the gain of the circuit goes down, which is probably good since the output of the cartridge will be higher."  The linear relationship between voltage output and st...
Butcher Block Acoustics
I cannot recall the last time anyone made the earth move for me.  More's the pity.  Mijo, you ARE far from Vilchur, Dohmann, Fletcher, and Conti.   Three of them are deceased and the fourth is in Australia.
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
Boothroyd, LOMC cartridges, like the Lyra cartridges you mention, will have inductance in the low micro-Henry range.  The low output MI cartridges made and marketed by SS have an inductance in the low milli-Henry range.  In other words, the induct...
Voltage mode vs current mode phono stages
Mijo, are you going for digital RIAA correction?
