Phono Stage upgrade to complement Dohmann Helix One Mk 2
In response to your question about SUTs vs different LOMC cartridges, as long as the cartridge has a low internal resistance, which nearly any good LOMC will have, i.e., less than ~20 ohms, the choice of a SUT is more linked to how much added gain...
Phono Stage upgrade to complement Dohmann Helix One Mk 2
I've heard both the EMIA and the Ypsilon (on different days driving the same downstream components), and I own a Steelhead v2.  You can't go wrong with either of the higher priced alternatives; they both sounded great to me, also using both a Ypsi...
I wrote/mailed tax checks today...
What has this thread got to do with Analog Audio? Please take it somewhere else among Audiogon Forums. I don’t care where.
Question about Cartridge Loading
Raul, It’s not my rule. It’s just physics. If you load a cartridge that has a 45R internal impedance with a 100R resistor, of course it will work. But a large fraction of the cartridge voltage output will be lost to ground and you will lose some H...
Question about Cartridge Loading
It's not that 450 ohms is "optimal".  It's that you want the phono stage input impedance to be at least 10X the internal impedance of the cartridge.  In your case, 10X = 450 ohms.  So any input impedance equal to OR GREATER THAN 450 ohms would com...
Inexpensive Good Vintage Turntables?
Although PBN do beautiful work on what are already excellent Denon turntables, the final cost would probably not meet the cost criteria laid down in the OP. Otherwise, great  idea. I’d vote for a Lenco L75 with maybe a few cost effective upgrades.
Dust cover up or down?
soko, I don't agree with your interpretation.  There was a time in the history of audio per se as a hobby, let's say since the mid-60s,  when the dust cover was an expected part of a turntable, and many manufacturers provided a hinged attachment f...
Question about Cartridge Loading
For LOMC cartridges, where the typical inductance is less than 50 micro-Henries, and often much less than that, does it really matter much to include inductance in the calculation?  I doubt it.  We saw a month ago that for the low output MI cartri...
Dust cover up or down?
I’ve got a digital VTF scale, and I do have the dust cover from my Victor QL10. It sits on the floor under a table near the QL10, but for me there are other more major reasons why I don’t use dust covers so I won’t be participating. Moreover, it i...
MM or HO MC Cartridge Choice-Input Please
In my accumulated experience, MM outperforms HOMC. Also it’s a good idea to define HOMC. I would define that group as having an output >> 1.0mV at standard velocity. An AT ART9, for example, is not an HOMC type.
Dust cover up or down?
Clearthinker, I think you ought to add a denominator to your survey. “How many have measured VTF with the dust cover up vs down, and did you detect a difference?” so far, 2 maybe 3 contributors here have both done the comparison and did detect ev...
Dust cover up or down?
Elliot, did you ever inspect the underside of your cartridge after playing several LPs? Do you think a dust cover can prevent the Schmutz?
Clearaudio RCM good alternative to VPI?
Tube type?
Is a Garrard 401 or 301 "accurate"??
Can you define "damping factor" as it applies to materials of which you might construct a plinth?  I can't imagine there is any single value that would describe that quality except if it has specific reference to a single frequency or set of frequ...
Clearaudio Concept cueing lever dropping
Is it a hardship to stand by and control the cueing? I usually do that even where the damping is doing its  job.
