Speakers for loud listening. really loud...
I think you'll have trouble with many speakers in a 10x13 room - something big enough to get loud for Tool might be very difficult to place practically in a room that size. My suggestion may be difficult as well - a pair of used NHT 2.9's. They ca...
Funniest sales pitch
I always like the ones that emphasize that the unit is "barely used" like it's some sort of collector automobile or something. I want to see something like, "used constantly, and it works and sounds like a dream".I also like the $100K speakers tha...
TV's... what does the typical audiophile have?
Sharp XVZ-10000 DLP front projector and 100" screen. I have not watched network TV since I was a kid. All of my viewing is movies and sports, but I'm as avid about both of those as I am music.Nobody should be staying away from a projection system ...
The listening constraints have been lifted
For me, it's concert DVD's that go on when the house is empty - concert level. There are some really good ones, and at empty-house level they can leave you feeling like you went to a concert. I'm getting old enough that it's then a bit of a relief...
Your own iTunes music categories
The only way to maximize efficiency and descriptive nature is to have categories that can be AND'd together. I don't believe any of the current music library programs do this, though you can do it with "searches" selectively by putting in keywords...
Anybody with Stewart FireHawk Screen?
I recently purchased the 100" Firehawk fixed screen Luxus Deluxe to use with my front-projector DLP. In a work, excellent! Definitely can be used with some ambient light in the room, and is really superb in a completely dark room. $1600 off a deal...
What music do you want to play really loud?
We Care A Lot - Faith No More
Dynaudio Contour 1.3 , 1.3mkII & 1.3se
I wouldn't spend the extra for the SE's for rears. The SE is just a beautiful speaker, and definitely a step up from the 1.3's - I'd spend the extra in a second for the fronts of a music system. Unless you listen to a lot of surround music, I'd sa...
Speaker Wire. Hokum or Truth?
I bought a pair of Hokum's and was amazed at their flexibility - my dealer said he would be willing to charge me any ridiculous price I was willing to fall for, and was willing to use more and better superlatives to describe the performance as I m...
What was your first music that you paid for?
The 45 of Don McLean's American Pie - bought at none other than Woolworths.
Great Customer Service
I've had two experiences with Krell on equipment I bought used - both times the service was exemplary. Quick turnaround, worked perfectly, little or no cost to me. Coupled with liking Krell amps a great deal, I'm not surprised Krell is an industry...
Digital Front End: Critical Listening
I have done more experimenting with digital sources than any other part of my system. I'm not a big experiementer, so this isn't saying a lot, but I've probably tried six different digital front ends a serious listen. I just have never found the d...
Hours sitting around just listening to music?
I travel a fair amount, but every night I'm home I listen for between 30 mins and 3 hours. My room is a dedicated room for music and HT, so I am always in the sweet spot. I am rarely "just listening" - I almost always have my laptop going, or have...
Records of the Year 2003
Great post Ben - thanks! My favorites from 2003 (some repeats from above):Jane's Addiction - Strays. Who says rock is dead?Jeff Beck - Jeff. Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers. I couldn't believe they couldn't get a recording contract...
Lexicon MC8 vs Bryston SP1.7 pre amp
I haven't heard the MC8, but own the MC12. The MC12 has six-channel analog pass=thru. I use my system for both HT and 2-channel music extensively. I find the MC12 to be a stellar performer in both cases. I owned the DC-1 and the MC-1 prior to the ...
