Why Don't More People Love Audio?
Start with a more basic question - why don't more people love music? It's certainly true, in my experience, that I find a lot more people willing to carry on a conversation about music than audio gear, and I'm sure there is a majority of people, p...
Large Audio Libraries
J. River has a reasonably good media interface, meaning an interface that is designed to be thrown up on a TV and navigated the way you'd expect that level of interface to be navigated. I haven't hooked it up to my TV, nor have I bought a video ca...
Large Audio Libraries
DC - Thanks! Since initiating this thread, I have continued to look for and keep my eyes open for a better jukebox - they're relatively easy to try and see how easy they are to break. Anyway, I had come across J. River MC and you are absolutely ri...
FPB 300 vs 600 - Incremental or Fundamental?
I own the FPB 200c, and haven't compared to the other two, but did own the KAV250a just prior. I have to believe that the step from the 250a to the 300 is the huge step, and from the 300 to the 600 minor in comparison. The 10T's like a lot of juic...
Big Sound = Big Speakers = Big Problems?
I'm probably not sure exactly what I mean by "big" sound either - it's probably a combination of a few things, including soundstage size. But also the "size" of the instruments being played - does a piano sound like a full-sized piano being played...
Big Sound = Big Speakers = Big Problems?
Wow - thanks for the very insightful replies. My system is a Denon 2900 player as a transport into a Lexicon MC-12 pre/pro, into a Krell FPB-200c for L/R (I listen to all my music in 2-channel), into Dynaudio Confidence 3's, with a Velodyne DD-15 s...
best concert venue
I will 3rd the Sheldon in St. Louis. Seating is actually closer to 700, but it is just a phenomenal place to see a show. I just saw David Byrne there in September, which was just the most recent of a long line of great performers who they get to p...
Lexicon MC12 V4
From the little I've researched it, V4 adds digital room correction, complete with microphones to measure response, etc. I believe it adds approx. $3K to the list price of the unit. -Kirk
The Best Live album
Nine Inch Nails - All That Could Have Been. Not everybody's cup of tea, and not something to necessarily and listen closely to end-to-end, but excellent recording and pretty awesome for what it is. The DVD is excellent as well.
7.1 vs 5.1
I've only had 5.1, though my intention is to do 7.1 if/when the room gets redone. However, my real answer to your question, for what it's worth, is I think it depends on how you derive the 7.1. Since it's not encoded discreetly, 7.1 has to be deri...
Good choices in a used A/V pre-amp?
I'd second the Lexicon DC-1 - absolutely wonderful on movies. No analog pass-thru for a pure audio signal on 2-channel music, but nice sounding nonetheless, and it does "surround" sound from 2-channel sources as well or better than anything on the...
live dvd/v concerts
I find myself less worried about the sound quality on concert DVDs as the video fills in some of the energy and takes one's mind off analyzing the sound. Still, great sound is welcomed. Some of my favorites:U2 - Live in Boston - the best produced ...
How Revealing Should a System Be?
I agree - I think as you explore higher-end systems, you start to realize the limitations of the vast number of recordings. The notion that they used to sound great to you isn't that they sound good on a poorer system, it's just that you didn't us...
Selecting audio components
My experience with the KAV-300CD was not good, and I'm a big Krell fan - I'd highly recommend their KRC-3 or KRC-HR preamp if you're so inclined, and definitely their amps. So, I'd recommend a different source component - maybe the Muse Model 9 si...
I'm almost too embarrassed to ask, but.....
Yeah, you would have noticed it a long time ago if you watch any movies at all if you had it wrong - nothing like a car driving from right to left to tell you if you have your speakers connected correctly.
