Old Amps that can still Kick Butt There are still lots of Dynaco ST-70 and ST-120s in service. Many with rebuilt driver boards. I ran a pair of slightly enhanced Dyna 70s for over 25 years, then added the VTA boards. One was built by the factory in 1961, the other built by my u...
Speaker size and soundstage Sensitivity is by definition the response to an input. The lower the sensitivity the more power required for any given input, the less sensitive the speaker. Since the magic of imaging resides in low level fine detail it stands to reason the low s...
I had a few drinks and bought some speakers, I've now sobered up I’d give them some break in time before making any decisions. The woofer suspensions need to loosen up, and good poly caps can take some burn in time. You might also find that the new speakers are "different", but bring other attributes that you l...
Speaker size and soundstage Soundstage is defined by the sensitivity of the speaker and quality of materials used in construction (= engineering) of the speaker. These 2 factors will determine soundstage. Quality of materials is certainly a factor that I agree with, and think...
I finally added a second REL Sub No matter how low you set the sub to isolate for voicing only the lows, still you are going to have that boom-boxy sound effect, Subs are for HT usage only. Not meant for music. Not getting any boom-boxy effect below 40hz....especially from a T-l...
Tube vs. Solid State Amplifiers Tubes are more interesting and for my tastes simply sound more like the real thing. Also tubes make the owner of a tube amp seem more interesting than otherwise as you can say to people, "I use tube amps" and stand back as they note how interest...
I finally added a second REL Sub Well done! I don't have two subs yet, and don't have REL, but agree with setting frequency range and volume very low. Just enough to augment the bottom octave, and not feature the subs. I'm only occasionally aware my sub is on.
Vinyl...should I stay, or should I go? I’ll invest some time and effort into seeing this through...Thanks guys for the help and advice... Skip Glad to hear you’re not giving up yet.....there’s good reason so many people are such staunch vinyl die-hards....there’s a lot more to it the ...
Speaker size and soundstage Sound stage has more to do with phasing, crossover points, driver dispersion, driver placement, and the shape and size of the front baffle than actual cabinet size. It’s also heavily influenced by placement, and the rest of the system.
Vinyl...should I stay, or should I go? You're vinyl equipment should be capable of outstanding performance. Not all albums are top notch, but with a good LP, and proper setup, your vinyl should be singing to you.
Tube vs. Solid State Amplifiers My tube amps sound better to me than my SS amps. The vast majority of the best systems I’ve heard were driven by tubes. Tubes bring me closer to the performance. I hear more. The sound stage sucks me in. I tended to stick with my SS amps for a yea...
MP150 or MP200 I’m well late to this party, but wanted to share that I successfully added an MP500 (J-NP500) stylus to an MP150 body with excellent results, even though it’s not the recommended upgrade for the MP150. The resulting sound was a nice upgrade over t...
String quartet or saxophone quartet? String quartet are a good test for an audio system...Timbre textural density of all instruments playing together in their own space is one of the test by which you know if your system is good or not... My sentiments exactly.
Do speaker wires matter Not being familiar with the speakers, and having not read thru all the replies, are there any adjustable pots on the speakers that could possibly be padding down the tweeters? (apologies if that's been brought up)
Should I got full tubes or stick with hybrid amps? If you're curious what the full tube experience is like, you'll never know without giving it a try. Then do some tube rolling to taylor the tonal balance and signature specifically to your liking. It's not only fun to do, but is part of the exp... |
