what's going on with specs? Once you get beyond ample current flow for a given speaker load, and reasonable output power for a desired volume level, specs have seriously limited value in high end audio. As soon as manufacturers figured out how to build circuits that measured...

Vinylistas and Tubers - One and the same? At it's best, on my system, I prefer the sound of my TT setup....I think there's a bit more texture, information, and spatial cues, but CD can sound good too and is a lot more convenient. My preference for tubes over SS is much stronger than my v...
Telling musicians to evaluate and choose their instruments in a “scientific” way? LOL.....exactly.
What percentage of the time do you listen to records vs. digital sources? Probably 60/40 CD vs vinyl due to the convenience. I tend to prefer vinyl, but it forces me to give up the remote, clean the records, turn them every 15-20 minutes, etc...sort of depends on whether the audio dude is listening, or just me. ;-)
Single driver vs traditional 3 way loudspeakers I want incredible transparency so I feel like I’m in the room. I want a vivid convincing sound stage. I want full range, so everything is present. I want dynamics and realistic spatial cues. I want natural delicate overtones that don’t sound like ...

I have no problem with people preferring whatever but calling that preference "musical" is kind of silly. It elevates a personal preference to a level it doesn’t belong at. Sorry....but I...
how would you describe a system that is musical in nature @ghdprentice Over the decades one by one each of my components ended up being tube. I imagine you could put together a non - tube really musical system. But honestly I have heard dozens and dozens of spectacular systems… I have owned a lot of fa...
how would you describe a system that is musical in nature If everything sounds clear and is in the right proportions, but is not convincing enough to provide your brain with an emotional experience, the system is likely analytical sounding. If the system consistently transports you into the performance s...
Who Were Your Mentors @pwpacp I’m probably not an "audiophile" yet by anyone’s standards here and this journey is surely incomplete. I continue to be amazed at what I can now hear from my own audio collection and sometimes find myself wiping a tear from the emotion of...
HiFi vs MidFi If the average masses have it heard of it, it’s probably mid-fi. I don’t see it as derogatory....it can have some useful connotations when trying to explain where Denon and Sony fit into the audio world compared to CAT or Krell. However, I clearly...
Why are there no tube televisions anymore? Visual differences are easier and more objective to describe and demonstrate. Audio differences are much more subjective, and vague. |
