Putting weights on speakers?
I bought a couple of fifty pound bags of play sand from Home Depot, put each in a nice pillow case which complements the room decor and placed one on top of each of my HT Tuba horn sub woofers which sit in sand boxes.  This is a very easy and fair...
Own Magnepans? Got Cats?
I never had cat trouble with Magnepans back when I owned them in the early 1980s, but our cat once gorged on dog food then reguritated into the top of a nearly new Lexicon DC-1 pre/pro.  Repairs cost $450.00.
Bruce Edgar
I never met Dr. Edgar, but I did exchange e-mails with him.  I found him to be very knowledgeable and helpful.  His enthusiasm for horns was contagious.  I am saddened by his demise.
We spend too much time talking about tweeters
Excuse the typo in the previous post.  What I meant to say is 3.5 kHz to 20 kHz is less than 2 and 1/2 octaves.
We spend too much time talking about tweeters
" So yeah, if we think we can hear to 20k, and tweeters are crossed over at 3.5k then that’s 16.5k of a 20k range... "What this says is true if one thinks only in Hz, but music is more commonly measured in octaves.  Music covers ten octaves and 3...
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions.
I might be jumping to an obvious but wrong conclusion, But I think open baffle subs would be quite compatible with the MBLs.
I Was Considering Active, Then I Watched This ...
lonemountain, thank you for your kind words.  Something I failed to mention in my earlier post is that my active horn speakers sound damned wonderful to me and to all my audiophile friends who have heard them.  It's the old "if at first you don't ...
I Was Considering Active, Then I Watched This ...
Back in 1999 I got the idea to build for myself a pair of fully horn loaded speakers with folded corner horns back in the room corners and mid range and tweeter horns out in the room where they would image better.  Because of the time difference c...
Best Speakers You Have Ever Heard In Your Home
I have had many good speakers, Magnepans, Acoustat 2+2s, three way Dynaudio d'Appolito towers and others, but at the risk of engaging in brazen self aggrandisement I must say the best speakers I've heard in my home are my present fully horn loaded...
So That's Where my Hazelnuts Went!
Come to think of it I did have the Telarc 1812.  I should have thought of it.  If I ever suffer another audio/O'possum crisis I will keep that in mind.
So That's Where my Hazelnuts Went!
One night my Labrador retriever and I opened the door to the second story deck to have a smoke.  Actually I was going to smoke Susie-Q the lab was going to bop down to the yard and engage in canine activities.  The instant the door was opened Susi...
Metal cabinet speakers
" @mijostyn, A D'Appoltio Array uses a 3rd order cross-over not a 6dB 1st order cross-over. "I happen to have discussed this subject with Dr. d'Appolito.  I was considering building a set of DIY speakers based on a Dynaudio design for DIY,. the M...
Do speaker wires matter
I apologize for picking nits, but I believe those Mirage speakers are bipolar instead of dipoles.  I should probably have a pair since I am bipolar also.
Veiled 'wet blanket' sound from tweeters
My first guess is that you have a couple of blown tweeters.  A sometimes cause of this is an amplifier driven into clipping.
Speaker upgrade
I use AER BD3 drivers in Oris 150 front horns from 200 Hz to 8kHz in my fully horn loaded, DEQX DSP controlled, tri amplified DIY speakers.  To my old, but experienced ears the SQ is excellent.  That experience makes me think the Charney might mer...
