Build or buy, speaker options
I have owned Acoustat 2+2 electrostatics, Maggies, three way Dynaudio d'Appolito towers among other store bought speakers while at the same time I have been designing and building DIY speakers for the last forty-seven years.  My first DIY project ...
KEF LS50 Wireless -- wow!!!
I have read that the LS 50 rolls off the bass below 70 HZ.  I don't own them, but if I did subwoofers would be mandatory.  I don't really consider a 5" driver to be a woofer.
Ported versus sealed speakers: is one type better?
In my experience and to my ears sealed enclosures are better than bass reflex.  Transmission lines are better yet, but horn loading is best of all.
Subwoofer Question
This question is probably just hypothetical since I doubt my wife would approve. even though she is very understanding about big speakers. I use Bill Fitzmaurice designed HT Tuba folded corner horn subs (18 cubic feet each) and love them.  If I ad...
Two medium size woofers Vs One big size woofer
Another factor to consider is a large, 15" or so, woofer properly loaded into a well designed bass front horn can make any combinations or 7" of 5" drivers ashamed of themselves.  The transients, impact, tunefulness, definition and clarity is uneq...
To horn or not to horn
"If one wants horns and high performance you will need to educate yourself and may have to do a bit of setup at the least. With horns, full horn loading is the best way but its also the largest way. If the horn speaker has a woofer in a box un...
To horn or not to horn
At various times my main speakers were Bose 901s, Series 1. Magnepan IIAs, Acoustat 2+2s and three way d'Appolito Dynaudio towers.  When it  comes to the realistic portrayal of music of all scales and types none of those systems could hold a candl...
Child Damage Mitigation
My  wife and I reared two rug rats during a time when we had Magnepan IIAs then Acoustat 2+2s.  We never had any problems.  I suppose we were just lucky.  However my wife's awful bulimic house cat did once regurgitate into the innards of a Lexicon...
Legacy Wavelet as Preamp/DAC/DSP vs just DSP
I hope this thread generates many replies.  I presently use  a DEQX HDP-3 DSP as a preamp, crossover, speaker correction, room correction, time correction, etc. component for my triamplified fully horn loaded system.  I would like to learn more ab...
OMG, just removed my speaker grills and the sound just opened up to a new level!
Since the mid 1980s all my speakers (many) have been DIY.  Ev en though I have a supply of good grill cloth stored in my work shop I have never even considered putting grills over drivers.  My current favorites, tri-amplified fully horn loaded DSP...
Bose 901
I bought a new pair of Bose 901s back in 1972.  I and many of my friends loved them.  I bought Magnepan MGIIAs about ten years later.  The Maggies became my main speakers, but I kept the 901s.  The 901s did wonderfully as surround sound speakers i...
What is felt to be the best in wall speaker for a large den?
My view of in wall speakers is the same of that of Mr. Richard Vandersteen.  It has been reported that he said that when Steinway makes an in wall concert grand piano he will make an in wall speaker.
Are your speakers designed for your listening taste and hearing ability?
One big advantage of my DIY speakers is that I am not afraid to keep modifying them until they sound right.  Since I got my fully horn loaded, DEQX DSP'ed speakers to playing in 2004 I have changed woofer drivers, folded corner horn enclosures, mi...
Would this room treatment be worthwhile?
Coincidentally, I had a sixty-five inch flat screen between and just behind the plane of my speakers.  A lighting surge took out the TV several months ago.  If my stereo was a four on a scale of one to ten it suddenly became a six or seven without...
Which of these power cords ?
I can't believe manufacturers would all compromise the sound of their components by using inadequate power cords? I can not believe that expensive power cords make an audible difference. At my rural home the current runs about 750 feet through ...
