Good tube amps to consider wit Spendor S5e
There is more to this than just power output. You will probably need a higher damping factor which is almost beyond valve amps.I understand though that Supratek is developing a KT88 amp with a much higher damping factor[maybe as high as 200].It mig...
Canadian Musicians
Thanks everybody for your recommendations.I also have CDs by the Rankins,Great Big Sea and Rita McNeil[I agree about her amazing voice-a morning radio announcer here was a big fan so I have heard a lot of her music].Of course Australia also shares...
Canadian Musicians
Keep them coming please.Cowboy Junkies are an old favourite I forgot to list.I remember going into recored shops in Nova Scotia and being amazed at the amount of local maritime province recordings.I hope this rich vein of Canadian folk/roots is st...
subwoofers and panels don't mix
Audiokinesis,Good to hear about your plans. You are right about the surrounds too.I have always preferred cloth surrounds to rubber.I understand that many of the RCF woofers are now back in production.I have mounted the L15/554k in a coffee table s...
Speaker Lifespan
How about Goodmans Axiom 80sDespite their really low power handling most are still going strong after nearly 40 years-and in many ways they are still the best sounding speaker ever.
Audiogon "Recordings to Die for" a complete summary
Lyle Lovett-Joshua Judges Ruth!At last somebody else who recognises genius when they hear it.And yet one of his least commercially successful albums. You should also try Guy Clark -Keepers.Stunning live recording.
subwoofers and panels don't mix
Eldartford is correct in saying you need large diameter short excursion cones. Most mainstream subs using long excursion drivers with heavy rubber surrounds are going to sound slow and smeared. They are just wrong.I can recommend the RCF L15 /554k 1...
Stand alone tweeters
Ribbon tweeters can add air and even timing to your system.I use a Fountek JP2 with a 0.5 mF cap. This is an affordable and effective way of doing this.If your speakers are not sensitive some attenuation might be needed.JT
Ani Difranco
Good stuff but you need to be in the right mood-And is she ever INtense.Still the world needs people with her conviction.
What's your system response on " Feels like home"
Interesting comments.I find both Norah Jones CDs sound a bit dull and hazy-sort of like a classic NAD amplifier. Not unpleasant but a bit contrived.JT
I'm Ready to go TUBE
You need to determine if your speakers suit a tube amp.In my experience most mainstream speakers don't.The real magic of tube amps is generally only revealed with simple efficient speakers. This is more involved than just efficiency too.Complex cro...
Do I even need or want a preamp?
I have tried all sorts of passive preamps. The good ones often will sound better than most active ones. But this does not mean that passives are better than actives. It just means that most actives are poor. This is probably the most neglected area in...
best preamp ever - cost is no object
Supratek needs consideration.A Supratek Cabernet has taken my system to a completely different level of performance[and I used a Metaxas Marquis before].I hear Supratek is also developing a dual cicuit topography with different outputs for bass an...
WILSON AUDIO/ cost vs. value
Woodburger,I have tried the Audience Au 24 cables. They sound very dull and compressed on my systems.Actually I could not believe how contrived sounding these are.Obviously some people with very bright shouty systems or rooms must find they work.So...
Just ordered my Supratek Chenin Preamp
Bartkofan, you are right of course.People bypassing huge retail and promotional markups and buying things based on consumer feedback and satisfaction levels is totally uncalled for. They are probably mostly terrorist plants trying to sully the prist...
