Opinions on Magnepans sales/marketing approach to
According to Wendell, brightness in Maggies is usually a consequence of low midbass rather than excessive treble. The thing is, each of their models is tuned for an average room. The larger a room, the less but smoother bass it tends to have -- and...
Which speakers should I get. $500-$1000
For jazz and classical and on a budget, I'd look at used Maggies, but only recent models unless you're willing to rebuild them (easily done with the kit if you have the time). They offer a level of realism that other speakers in that price range d...
An audiophile dilemma
Dayglo, I've noticed the same thing. Some of that has to do with how they're mounted in the studio, and with the very dry acoustics up front. Some I think has to do with the limited dispersion of the typical pro monitor. JBL's may be an exception ...

That's great, I envy you!
An audiophile dilemma
Mlsstl, I agree. I tried to touch on the point when I compared the $10,000 Quads to $100,000 behemoths. There are some things the Quads can do that a big pair of Wilsons can't, and vice-versa. I don't think anything will beat the Quads for acousti...
What are the sonic differences betweenÂ…
The answer is that the waves are quite audible. The differences in subs are audible as well and can range from subtle (when comparing very good ones) to immense (when comparing for a example a good one to a boomy home theater one).
An audiophile dilemma
"If great speakers are being made, then the knowledge exist, so why don't all producers make great speakers. What makes a speaker great, and how much does it cost to make one?"Rok2id, that's a fair question. The answer, I think, isn't any differen...
What are the sonic differences betweenÂ…
Krell_man, you may be thinking of the oft-repeated admonition that you shouldn't hear the sub as a separate entity. It should extend the bass of your speakers transparently, without calling attention to itself as a separate driver.Or, perhaps, to ...
An audiophile dilemma
Rok2id, you said, at the beginning of this thread:"Are those high end (and very expensive) speakers really better than the JBL's?"All things considered, NO! The media we are playing was not recorded by God. None of it sounds live. So why spend a l...
An audiophile dilemma
"Only if you can see the equipment, will you be able to 'hear' the imagined differences / deficiencies. Put everything out of sight and NO ONE can tell or hear a difference. Not wanting to revisit this 'sensitive' subject, except that there might ...
Why don't you like Mageplanar speakers?
It's also worth noting that there are planar magnetics that do use neodynium ribbons and give you amazingly high efficiencies, like the Wisdoms and Graz's Apogees. However, one look at the price of these and most people will gasp and go back to th...
Room acoustics
It wouuld also help to know something about the problems. I took "living space of echos" to indicate problems with a large, underdamped/underdiffused space, quite possibly with some very reflective tile and such in the kitchen. As a general rule, ...
Mini Maggie Office System
Sonance, there are some positive reports of the Wyred with Maggies. I haven't heard it myself. I'd note though that the Minis are very revealing of electronics and if there's any Class D grain in the highs you'll likely hear it.(BTW, I saw your po...
Magnepan Bass, Dynamics and Subwoofers
Well, a thread like that, which is devoted for some reason to criticizing a certain kind of speaker, is going to attract a certain kind of post. If you look at the specified and measured performance of Maggies, you'll find that it covers much the ...
Room acoustics
I just got some diffusers from them. I think the GIK products are OK for the money, though if you're willing to pay more you can get more. But my question is, why would you treat echoes with acoustical treatment and not change the decor? Not that ...
