Magnepan CCR Center Channel Speaker
Southernphoenix,Given a system of that quality, I suggest you check out the tri-center as a potential upgrade path:http://www.theaudiobeat.com/blog/magnepan_37_tricenter_system.htm

Nordic, I have a MOSFET amp here, an old Hafler, and they shake out very much as you suggest.

Utley -- Yes, there could definitely be overkill. I doubt you'll use all the power the monoblocks have. So after that, you're talking about subtleties of sound that depend on the amp model. And I don't know whether you'd hear them (or I'd hear the...
Magnepan Crossover Mod Approach?
Jaymark, have you considered moving up to the 3.7? It has the true ribbon tweeter, which has just the top end transparency and extension you're looking for. Or maybe a 3.6? I don't know how it compares to the 1.7, which I still haven't heard, but ...
Why do you Pick a Certain Speaker producer?
A) Sound. This is to some extent personal preference, in that I buy speakers that sound best with the kind of material to which I listen. I've found that as you move up the line, that's less of an issue, since there are fewer design compromises --...
Mini Maggie System hurts to listen to
Yeah, agree with Shakey -- Maggies sound awful before burn-in. Apparently it's the thermal cycling that limbers things up.Rjohnson, the word from Magnepan is that while the Minis can be used in a small room they're basically designed to be desktop...
Magnepan Crossover Mod Approach?
To get to the crossover parts on a Maggie, all you have to do is unscrew the panel that has the connectors on it. The panel lifts out, and there they are. That being said, I would be cautious about changing the crossover on a 1.7. I've seen the cir...

Utley, yes, I'd consider the monoblocks. I doubt you'll be calling on their full power, since the 1.7's will start to sound edgy before that. But arguably, all that power reserve pays off in better regulation where they do play, and keeps them out...

Ejman, I can't answer that since I haven't seen the circuit. I guess that sort of thing can happen with any device, no matter how good -- they might stop making an output transistor, what have you. As you say, 10-20 years from now it probably won'...

Just about any gear of this sort will last quite a while. Eventually, caps will start to go, sooner if less expensive parts are used. But caps are easy to replace and all amps need to have it done at some point, albeit it's going to happen years l...

I have an XPA-2. I'd say it's a shade less transparent in the upper midrange than the very best -- it's a sweet sounding amp with immense reserves, but it has a very slight hint of fine grain. For the money, I don't think it can be touched.
Magnepan 3.7
I was looking for the source that said that Mylar was less resonant than Kapton, but couldn't find it. I did find an old post from Mart at Planar Asylum to the effect that Magnepan uses Mylar because it's less expensive.By the way, I just saw the ...
Magnepan 3.7
Epsilonman,As you point out, the IRS V -- surely one of the greatest speakers ever made -- cost $60,000, and that was when it was new. The priciest Maggie goes for 1/3 of that, 1/6 when you factor in inflation. So you're comparing apples and orang...
Magnepan 3.7's versus 20.1's?
S_c123, there's someone on the Planar Asylum who's putting together a system similar to yours, Tympani 1-D bass panels + MG IIIA's. I'm sure he'll be pleased to hear that you've gotten such good results. I'm curious though -- why did you combine t...
Magnepan 20R vs 20.1Rs
I suspect that the top end of the Radio Shack meters (and most inexpensive calibrated mics) is too inconsistent. If you want to make inexpensive measurements that are more meaningful, you might look into a calibrated Behringer:http://cross-spectru...
