Advice Please On Turntable Upgrade?
Marantz tt-15s1I haven't heard one outside of a shop but I can personally attest that other people think it's fantastic and punches well above its weight. A used one in good shape will easily fit your budget.
Cartridge or Pre Amp
@joyofsound You can’t go wrong with the ART9. I think it depends on how much cash you want to invest. ART9 is around $1k depending where you get it. If you want to go above that I’d agree that a good phono stage would make a big difference. Mine i...
Cartridge or Pre Amp
I didn’t mean to cast aspersions on the AT cartridges (as the happy owner of an ART9 myself). What I’m suggesting is that at this stage of the game the OP might want to be learning more about which parts of the system have the most leverage, and w...
Cartridge or Pre Amp
... if I understand your cartridge correctly

Tube rolling could help. If I were you I'd try a different cartridge - maybe go from mm to MC. The change Would be instructive one way or another. And your system could handle the higher quality source.
Don't waste money on ultrasonic RCMs
out here on the interwebs it's a fine line between tongue-in-cheek and trolling
Technics Sp10 Mk2 vs SL-1200G - I finally did an A/B
great thread; really interesting info. I've been thinking hard about a new 1200G but I began to feel that it might be comparable to what I already have (modded rim drive VPI). So that puts me where you are  @chakster - thinking about an SP10r but ...
Is a GREAT turntable under $2000 possible???
Btw - nice thing about an older VPI is that you can gradually upgrade the parts and end up with a really stellar turntable (and a nice analog rabbit hole to fall into!). The Aries TT's are great for that.

oops -- once again I forgot to refresh the page before posting a response.  Sorry if i'm being redundant.

the trouble is you'll need a good phono stage to do justice to whatever you put together with the turntable. all of it can be done used for better value (except maybe the cartridge), but $3000 maybe a more reasonable target to get an analog front ...
Phono Preamps with "balls" ?
@chakster  yes I've been really impressed with the Zyx CPP-1. It's my understanding that the increase in gain in the second version was actually driven mainly by customers. So the first version may be closer to Mr nakatsuka's original vision.  Als...
Pani ... New ART-9 up and running ...
The thing that jumps out to me most about this cartridge is its ability separate out the various instruments. I wonder how it does that.
Phonostages with Adjustable Curves, the Concise List
My old Scott 299 integrated amp has two phono settings - "riaa nartb Ortho" and "euro 78." Its a wonderful old school amp that my grandfather bought when it first came out, and I later spent years listening to it at home as a kid. Anyone know what...
Phono Preamps with "balls" ?
If you're considering an SUT in conjunction with a MM phono stage, then you might also consider the Zyx Cryo Pre-preamp. It is definitely ballsy. The latest update (v.2) increased the gain over the previous version.  It's a marvelous step up devic...
