mono amp connections.
Jphii, GREAT answer!Biamping always seems a bit too complicated for my tastes. It's not easy to do effectively, and so many neophites seem eager to try. BiWIRING is complicated enough!Duff, if the amps aren't identical, and it sounds as if they ar...
Bi-wirring long run rear surrounds
Lej, just what is 'the cardinal sin'?Gas, I THINK your store was addressing possible problems (eg less-well-damped bass) from the increase in cable resistance that results from single-biwiring, ie biwiring with parts of a single cable. Long length...
What is biwiring? Are my speakers compatible?
Audioquest has some good info on that here http://www.audioquest.com/ ; select Cable Theory. Biwiring is using 2 cables or 2 parts of one cable per speaker to sort of divide and conquer, rather the way speaker designers use different drivers in a ...
Can tube amps play loudly?
"Slappy, I appreciate your detailed explanation. Those sorts of volume levels would be completely acceptable to me. In fact, I'm surprised I could get that kind of volume with relatively un-sensitive (SIC) speakers."Uuh...those levels are at ONE M...
Driver efficiency vs. overall speaker efficiency
""Efficiency"???...The only thing I see quoted in specs is SPL in units of dB at 1 meter for 2.83 volts. This is 1 watt for an 8 ohm load.Power = Volts squared divided by ohms.(2.83 * 2.83) / 8For 4 ohms it's 2 watts."What's your point? I already ...
Driver efficiency vs. overall speaker efficiency
Here we go again. One thing we modern folk oft do is to use the WRONG terminology. 'Efficiency' is different than 'sensitivity'. Speaker-system efficiency normally is measured 1 meter from the speaker/driver when driven with exactly 1 watt of powe...
Aerial CC3/LR3/SR3 vs. Alantic tech vs Triad vs ?
I have a CC3B centerchannel speaker and love it. It's very balanced and open for me, and definitely has authority when the signal is full-range. Upper frequencies are highly nonfatiguing.I've rebuilt the crossovers (and removed the 2 frequency con...
what is a "tape loop"?
James, IMO your explanation is excellent. You're too humble.
Anyone compare Conrad Premier to Rogue?
Arafel, still haven't done anything?Personally, I'd upgrade the poweramps first since you're substantially short on power.Buy a used pair; you can always sell them if you don't love them and it will cost you very little..
E.A.T. KT88's ???
Yes, indeed, the materials AND the execution...the care and skill used in the assembly.'Vacuum Tube Valley' tested 6550s/KT88s/90s in issue 19 and indicated the Ei KT90 the Best Value of the group. (The original Tung-Sol 6550 was voted the Best 65...
Conrad Johnson PV10AL Tube & Polarity Questions?
M, absolutely the PV10 inverts signal polarity, since it has only 1 stage of gain in its line section.Thx for the positive response..
Conrad Johnson PV10AL Tube & Polarity Questions?
Scott, I believe the Premier 2 has the same basic structure as the Premier 3, that being 2 gain stages each in the fono and line sections. That means that neither section inverts signal polarity. But do follow Herman's advice and request a manual.
Capacitor-less amps
"There is some confusion: "in the signal path" means in series."I agree; that's the definition I always understood."Decoupling capacitors are in the signal path."'Decoupling' usually means a relatively small cap from DC power to ground that isolat...
Conrad Johnson PV10AL Tube & Polarity Questions?
M, during the last decade or so, c-j has simplified its preamp designs and now uses only one gain stage in the line stages of its preamps. Of course, with an odd number of gain stages, namely one, these do indeed invert signal polarity. I've owned...
Conrad Johnson PV10AL Tube & Polarity Questions?
"ALL cj pre amps invert polarity. It's a given."Wow--THAT's such a misstatement I'd considered it a lie.Not all c-j preamps invert signal polarity. Those that have an odd number of gain stages do indeed invert polarity, as do all preamps (or power...
