Which is better, gain in phono stage or pre amp?
My opinion is that if you're running the level control of your line stage only a little open, you're risking overloading its input stage with the HIGH output of the phono stage. I'd use the phono stage's low-gain setting.PS. It's a 'moderate-OUTPU...
center ch. as LCR ?
Your trio of centerchannel speakers will do just fine as L/Rs but will have the correct hi-frequency-dispersion pattern only if they're arranged horizontally. Ever notice that some 'center-channel' speakers have their tweeters (and MR drivers, too...
which power tube sounds better: EL34 or 6550
My understanding is that the best of the EL34-based amps might have a more tonally rich* midrange, but a less-defined bass. The 6550/KT88-based amps will sound a little-more balanced throughout the 10 octaves--that is, tighter bass, more-detailed ...
DVD-A vs. music or concert DVD in DTS
Generally, I prefer the sound quality of hi-res DVD-A, but I find DTS-equipped DVD-videos to be quite listenable.
Tubed-amp power-supply question
Awesome indeed. TYVM.
How to add a high pass crossover at the amp inputs
Good idea for what? If it's to add a single-order to 'block' low frequencies from the subsequent speakers, it'll work.A Search for 'filter formula' turned up this thread. http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?htech&1090637736&read&ke...
Power amp for a 98 DB speakers from 60Hz up
Try a c-j MV60 in triode--25wpc if I remember correctly. This current version of their long-lived, stereo, 2-pairs-of-EL34s poweramps* is so good c-j discontinued the Premier Eleven. About $3000 new, $1600 used, I think.* that started with the MV45
Newbie question on 6.1 speakers - rear
As I understand it, 6.1 has 3 surrounds, left, right, and center. If one parks the L/R surrounds at the c. 4-o'clock and 8-o'clock positions as the ITU standard recommends, a surround-rear would serve to fill a hole in the (rear) middle.

Trade-off between soundstage vs. PRAT
What's PRAT, besides an undefined acronym?
DVD-A recording titles to die for
I agree with Eldarford--I push Play and they all play in multichannel mode.I think that's selected in the player's initial setup.
Monoblock Suggestion?
If you haven't already chosen amps, consider using a pair of tubed stereo amps in mono. With a tubed amp, one merely runs the 2 channels in parallel and ends up with the combined power into half the indicated output impedance. For instance, an ine...
Large Can Power Caps Compatibility Question
They look OK to me. The real rating you have to be careful about in Power-Supply (= electrolytic) caps is the max-voltage rating. You NEVER should use an electrolytic cap with a voltage rating LOWER than what was there. (Audiofile-grade film caps ...
DVD-A recording titles to die for
First, my principle criterion for great-sounding classical recordings is naturalness--I want to be transported to the concert hall. With that in mind, all of the several Naxos clasical DVD-As ( http://www.naxos.com/mainsite/default.asp?label=Naxos...
What is "slope"???
"Ezmeralda, Jeffrey -- thanks for the the clarification on the slope values. My memory doesn't seem to work quite as well as it once did ;-) Next time I'll confirm before I post."You're welcome. Happens to us all. I had a poor memory when I was yo...
