Antique Hurricane Bias
Altec-Lansing 1570Bs...my my. Been a long time since I've seen them mentioned. Had a pair years ago, to drive some electrostatics. They sounded pretty good but they were WAY too complicated, with their transformer-coupled circuitry and something-l...
What speakers for Triode 80 /150watts Mono Amps ?
Seems to me you're going about it backwards. Fall in love with speakers 1st; then choose an amp. Speakers have FAR-greater influence on overall sound than amps.
Dared MP-7 Output Impedence and 15 ohms' speakers
OK, Toobie, I think I've got it. The reason it took so long is that you're talking about paralleling speakers, but you don't have enough of them. Let's talk about the left channel. You have one amplifier channel and one speaker system. What's to w...

I still don't understand. Does 'one tube amp' mean one single-channel amp? Or is it a stereo amp? Are you intending to build a 2-channel system or a single-channel system? If stereo, do you have 4 speaker systems?

Haw many speaker systems do you have? Just what are you intending to wire in parallel?I'd hook one speaker system to the 8-Ohm tap of each amp and listen. Unless the speakers are REALLY sensitive, you won't get much volume with 6 watts.
Aging of capacitors within crossover networks
Dazzdax, if your crossover uses electrolytic caps, do indeed replace them, and as Mr. Elliott indicates, with better-quality caps. If the 'lytics are in the midrange or tweeter sections, replace them with the best film caps you can afford. As indi...
Aging of capacitors within crossover networks
Gee, Ed, I'm glad I never said any of those things and never recommended Blackgate. I'll say it another way:1. Speaker manufacturers use the best-sounding parts they can WITHIN SEVERE PRICE CONSTRAINTS.2. There are LOTS of better-sounding caps out...
Gallo reference /TAS vs Me
Jcruse, just where on that site might I find that prospective center-channel speaker?
Aging of capacitors within crossover networks
"You don't think the person building the crossover tests them all? Come on."Ed, YOU and I might measure them, but do you really think manufacturers of even expensive speakers measure and select every cap, resistor, and inductor that goes into thei...
Aging of capacitors within crossover networks
HIGHLY unlikely. I suppose if some component is REALLY low quality, its value might change slightly over time, but otherwise, no.The dialectric material (plastic film, usually) in capacitors will change sound quality slightly as it 'takes a set' d...
Need capacitor recommendations for tube amps
Here are some thoughtful comments on coupling caps by Mike Elliott of Counterpoint and Alta Vista Audio.http://www.altavistaaudio.com/caps.html
To much high
I definitely agree with NOT using errors in other components to fix errors in another.Try to fix your room as much as possible. After that, add a resistor to the tweeter circuit. (This resistor must be added BEFORE the tweeter's filter cap or you'...
To much high
"To much high"Is that different than 'From much high'?I think you meant 'too'. :-).
7.1 vs 5.1
"Naa, 7.1 splits the rear center channel into two, then matrixes the rear-center signal with the surround signals to create 2 rear speakers to go with the two surround speakers and the frontals."Huh? Try that again, pls. For instance, WHAT "rear c...
7.1 vs 5.1
Oh PLEASE someone educate me! I thought 6.1 added the center surround channel to 5.1 and that 7.1 added the near-left and near-right FRONT speakers to 5.1.Yes? No?
