Tube amp blues
Richard- Since you didn't detail that the noise was specific to one channel, I'll assume that it is occuring in both channels. With that said, swapping tubes from one channel to the other may not provide any further insight into the problem. Howev...
Thoughts re: cartridge/interconnects
Golf- I had a pair of early MI 330 IC that did show noticeable corrosion when I opened them up. This may have been a unique problem, but I wouldn't rule out the very worthwhile improvement of more current cable designs. Do the tubes, then the cabl...
Conventional DAC
Quite right, Redkiwi. James001- Be careful no to get caught up in the "numbers" game too much. I'd take sound quality over a 24/96K logo anyday. Just my .02.
Cable Costs Relative to System
Hey, what's wrong with the rating system? Just tried to give high marks and the thing came back as negatives. What's up, Audiogon?
Cable Costs Relative to System
Sorry, Sdcampbell- I agree with you about the need for adjusting the listening room. Been there, done that. I'll still consider my money well spent on the expensive cables and power cords that I'm using. Is it self delusion? Well, not according to...
Cable Costs Relative to System
Metaphysics- I've done some of the comparisons that you asked about with the Coincident IC vs Nordost Quattro fil vs Kimber Select Silver vs KCAG vs FMS Nexus. All are excelent cables, but the Coincident and the Kimber Select Silver came out on to...
Cable Costs Relative to System
Metaphysics- As for me, I think "it takes what it takes," regardless of the relative system percentage. Great cables are absolutely necessary, and rarely inexpensive. The same can be said about active devices as well. I'm sure that there are many ...
Really need a DAC w/ a great CD player
Gallaine- I agree with you on the idea that separates aren't always better than a properly implement CD player. Though more expensive than the units previously mentioned, the Cary 303 and the Electrocompaniet EMC-1 are just two examples of outstan...
Preamp with Remote ?
Though rarely seen on the used market, the WAVAC tube pre-amp with remote is very good! Goodluck.
Best 2 Channel Amp under 5k
New or used price? A used pair of Cary 805C can be found under $5K. With a few relatively inexpensive tweaks, they can be absolutely incredible. For SS, I like Pass,Spectral, and Gryphon. Just MHO.
JADIS DEFY 7 SPIT SPUTTER
Regrettably, there are many possible sources. Though the sound is usually indicative of a faulty tube, I've had dirty/poor contacts on tube sockets also produce a similar sound. Rereading your post, did you try swapping the output tubes and then r...
Really need a DAC w/ a great CD player
Npotter- I would suggest that you not discount the importance of a good transport in the overall sound of a transport/DAC combination. Also, the platform under the transport will have an effect on the sound(vibration equals data errors/corrections...
Guilty Pleasures
OK, Brulee. Point taken. However, you remember that the next time I assail you with recordings of fingernails on a chaulkboard. (For the record, I like Tom Waits as a "live act" and as an actor, but I find that most of his recordings are an acquir...
Reviewing the Reviewers
THANKS PHILD! The high-endaudio.com site is a breath of fresh air. This should be required reading, especially for those just starting out in the hobby. This should be a warning shot for the marketing rags, in particular, Stereo-pile. Had I found ...
Coincident Cables Experiences? Any Good?
Ejlif- As with all things audio, it comes down to personal preferences. I too heard the Quattro fil better the Coincident in a couple of areas, specific imaging and soundstage quietness. It also had good layering of images, but not much in terms o...
