Audible Illusions M3A update
Slowhand- Sounds like an expensive "upgrade". Have you thought about selling your unit and then buying the new version instead? The cost difference can't be that much and it might have a higher resale value as a "new model", not an upgrade. Just a...
Pease help with next upgrade
I would tend to agree that your speaker cable should be upgraded first. As for power considerations, if possible, get dedicated circuits installed to power your equipment before you spend more in this area. You may find, as I did, that no further ...
Great sound but broken sockets ?
Roger- For flexible (relatively speaking), try the Shunyata line. With the other top cords, you have to bend them into shape before you insert either end into the sockets to avoid broken connectors. It is time consuming and tough on the hands, but...
MIT bashed, not Transparent, why?
Transparent originally distributed MIT until they figured that they could make a better product (or was it high profit?). Since MIT started out the use of "tuning networks", they are perceived as the primary company utilizing this concept. If Tran...
What do you guys think of Spectral?
I've used Spectral DMC20 (modified) and DMA180 on ML Monolith and Audiostatic ESLs. They did seem to perform best with the best ($$$) MIT cables, (tended to tame a slightly dry upper mid, lower treble). Outstanding sonics with turntable as source ...
Pre/Pro for $2K
I support Coltrane's suggestion about the B&K Ref units. For the money, they are quite good, even with audio only applications. Then if you have some money left over, you could consider upgrading the amplifier. Just my .02
Upgrade VTL 2.5 pre to CJ P14 or ARC???
Steve- Have in considered having your VTL upgraded? With improved components (caps, resistors, volume controls, NOS tubes, etc... and improved power supply), you might not want to upgrade to another pre-amp. Of course, the added expensive may or m...
Help in Interconnect cables
Sso1- For reasonably priced ICs, try the Coincident Speaker Technology cables. For higher level and cost, try the FIM Silver or Gold series. These are quite stiff, though. I'd suggest that you try some great power cords first, before you consider ...
Kinergetics SW200 rip-off ??
Frogman- Regrettably, it is very difficult to be happy with inexpensive subwoofer systems. The SW200 that I owned sounded very similar to your description minus the rattle. Though it certainly helped with the Acoustats that I had at the time, the ...
Shed some light on this please
Gmkowal- The engineer part of me would agree with your position. However, having compared power cords on equipment with massively filtered and overbuilt power supplies, has not proven this to be true. I still get quite dramatic sonic improvements ...
I Have Decided To....
Check out the Coincident Speaker Technology IC. Very good for the money (< $300 retail). Goodluck
Where do you buy Hubbell wall socket?
Nex- I responded to the other thread of the same title. Anyway, try the FIM A/C duplex instead. Nice sonic improvement over the Hubbell Hospital or Heavy-duty (preferred over the Hospital grade because nickel isn't used as a contact material) dupl...
Where do you buy Hubbell wall socket?
Nex- I'd highly recommend that you consider the FIM A/C duplex outlet instead. It retails for about $50-$55 per duplex and is a nice improvement over the Hubbell hospital or heavy-duty outlets. If interested, call Sound Trends (my local dealer for...
I promised myself I'd never do this
Jeff- Without specifics about your cables and power cords, it's a little difficult to get the whole system approach. Obviously, great power cords (Shunyata KC, FIM GOLD, NBS 0) can make a HUGE difference. Darker/warmer cables could help. A warmer ...
Tube vs. Solid State for Dummies?
Dchace- Be careful not to get caught up into the "numbers game" associated with the current spec most often noted for ss amps. Though it may offer a relationship to the relative size of the power supply, and the number of output devices (and conse...
