Single-Ended vs. Push -Pull
Larryr- My experience has indicated that SET sound is unique. There is a purity and harmonic structure to SET designs that I haven't heard in P-P. Obviously, it is much easier and efficient to make a high power P-P that can drive difficult load or...
SS versus Tubes
Redkiwi- My audio room is concrete slab, but tubes still rule in the mid to upper bass. High spl, 20 hz stuff, was accomplished best with OTLs. That is, right up to the point of tube failure! (Ouch, $$.) However, as I mentioned, I do put alot of e...
Coincident Total Eclipse/Avalon Radian
Gvwaudio- Cornfed is quite right. I've listened to the Eidolons and the Total Eclipse. If you want SET amps, go with the T.E. If you're willing to trade the sound of SETs for extremely high quality ss (which means $$$), then the Avalons are a cons...
SACD - Is it happening yet?
Kublakhan- If what's in store for us with SACD/DVD-A are your mentioned or similar fare, and I tend to think you may be right, would you mind sharing the Vicadin? I'll need more sleep!
Spade termination on speaker
Dcaudio- I've tried a couple of the spade-to-banana adapters. They're fine for getting by in a pinch, but I don't recommend them in a hi-res system. Either carefully spread the spades to fit the speaker binding posts or replace the binding posts w...
Virgin Records announces support of SACD
Sorry to be so sarcastic, but "Yippie, multichannel to save the poor, misled, hi-end audio devotee". I for one have no interest in multichannel SACD or DVD-A considering the attempts I've heard so far. I do hope that one or the other or both new f...
Where s the bass?
Tai- As mentioned, speaker placement, listening position, and room treatments are all necessary areas to consider with your current problem. Having owned them at one time, might I suggest that you try other cables as well. This is not a jab at Tra...
SS versus Tubes
In general, I think we should clarify something for the uninitiated or novice tube follower. Tube products don't have to be round or blunted in dynamics, or bloated and ill-defined in the bass. I've never liked the "old tube sound". Actually, all ...
tube preamp for Mark levinson
A1126- Check the input impedance of the amp. Ideally, the pre-amp (tube or ss) should have an output impedance of 1/100 of the amplifier input impedance or lower. This is "ideal". I've had good results at 20:1 with VERY short interconnects. A good...
How can power cords make a difference?
Albert, Brulee, Hdm, and others- We've all gone round and round with these individuals who continue to hold to the rationale that would justify their not obtaining/purchasing "expensive power cords". They continue to refuse to participate in the w...
Power Cords for Cary805c amps
Larry- I currently have the 805c, though heavily modified. I'm using the FIM Gold. I have used ElectraGlide Fatboy, Shunyata Black Mamba, Cobra, and King Cobra, and the FIM Gold is the best in my system by a significant amount. Transparency and dy...
What s the minimum power .....
Jair- Lak is quite right. The efficiency and the impedance (not just the nominal but also the min/max) of the speaker would be needed to further assist in a recommendation. Also, keep in mind that not all "watts" are created equal. I have 50wpc am...
Sell King Cobra s and buy F I M Gold ?
Chuckie- I've owned the EG Fatboys and the Shunyata KC and Cobra cords. The FIM Gold has bettered everything I throw at it. I do enjoy some of the characteristics of the KCv1 (and still use one in my system, for now), but the FIM Gold is the clear...
Electrostatic positioning 1A
Through much trial and error, I found that I could obtain my desired tonal tweaking with electrostats by adjusting both toe-in and tilt. Abstract7's suggestion also affords the ability to play with different sound absorption material on the rear p...
Break-in factor rqd for new cd player?
Sutts- Yes, burnin is definitely required. I wouldn't be concerned for about a week (20 to 80 hours play time seems to cover most CD players, excluding SACD players it seems). Give it some to time before critical listening. Good luck.
