Do I want a preamp? I would reiterate everything Kana813 stated but also add amplifier gain as a factor. If your amp has less than 30db gain you should keep your preamp. FWIW, I currently run my DAC direct into my power amp and it sounds wonderful.
Looking for spkr suggestions Considering your choice of music I would add the Energy Connesuier (spelling is off) series, look at the top of that line. Also you should check out Tannoy D500 or S10.
Speakers that sound like Thiels on steroids. Got an email back from Thiel regarding the SW1. They say that production is delayed awaiting parts and once the backorder is cleared some units will be shipped for review. No word on a timeframe when production will resume.
40' speaker cable..will I loose sound quality? Assuming you use 12ga cables you will lose about 1db in the cables. SPL loss will be less for larger guages and more for smaller guages. Besides the spl loss there is the obvious expenditure for such long cables. Now to answer your question about ...
Risk in airshipping of speakers - experiences? Why not ask a distributor in Europe who ships his speakers from the US. Ask them how they ship and if they encounter problems. I think air freight would be better than putting it on a container ship, but a distributor would know better.
VTL / Pass / Lamm I have Thiel CS2.3's and drive mine with Sim Audio Moon W-5. I would characterize the Moon as an iron fist in a velvet glove. The result is excellent control and dynamics with a nimble delicate touch and a fair amount of air. Currently the DAC is ...
Tube amp for ML Prodigy's Wolcott Presence Monoblocks, 220 watts in any load. They have an excellent reputation with electrostats. I think they are about 10k a pair new.
Digital Interconnects I ran 5 digital IC's through my system and the Acoustic Zen MC2 AES/EBU beat them all.
Speakers that sound like Thiels on steroids. The larger Thiels just don't have the air and high-frequency extension of the smaller ones. The CS7.2 and CS6 still have the unmistakeable Thiel midrange but sometimes it gets buried by the bass. The Thiel CS3.6 might just do the trick for me. I h...
Bryston 7B SST vs. Parasound Halo JC 1 shootout... Artar1,JA was criticised for publishing a review remarking on poor sound when he wasn't even certain that the speaker (CS1.6) was broken-in yet. That was half-ass and there is no excuse for it. Denf,I am familiar with the Bryston amps, since I own...
Round Two: Best Speakers for LOUD music and rock?? Wilson Watt/Puppy 7's should do the trick. Incredible dynamics and fast too. They have very good transparency, but not the best. Should be able hit 115-120 decibels with these, 94db efficiency. Soundstage and focus is subpar for this price point, ...
What's the best approach? Find a pair of speakers that the very thought of puts a smile on your face. Pick the right amp to drive it. Since you are building from scratch it may be a good idea to build a passsive preamp system. Some people talk down a passive preamp setup a...
Speakers that have holographic imaging on vocals.. It takes a lot more than just good speakers to get 3D imaging. There is source, amplification, cables (esp IC's), room acoustics, speaker setup, and proper listening position. Of the speakers you have already discounted I wonder how many you audit...
Silverline?Thiels? Audio Physic?: Need guidance Don't let someone else tell you what your ears should be hearing. Consider a pass x150, pass aleph, Sim Audio w-3, Plinius sa102, etc and put a tube preamp in front. Or maybe go with passive preamp and ss poweramp or otl tube amp. Point is not to ...
ICs for Supratek Pre Bwhite,I have a Cortese on order and Mick has assured me that its XLR outputs generate a fully balanced signal. I understand that you had some problem with Mick's XLR connections awhile back, but that was quite some time ago. I think those issues ... |
